His Gift I don't know why, but have been thinking about the Purple One's gift of musical genius. As a warning here, if you do not believe in a higher power, or can't take anything on faith alone, you might want to delve into one of the other meaner topics right now.
You know when you look at the lives of people around you, you can see that "no one really has it all" in this life? There is always some portion of their lives that is not right, or is going south? Like a friend of yours has a really great job, but has never gotten married or found the right one, etc? Someone has really great kids, but their husband is cheating on them.
I got to thinking one evening about the things Prince had to endure in life, and the list is pretty sobering- some of them I don't know if I could have taken in combination.
*Death of his children *Distance in his relationship with parents *Very short for a male *Emotional trauma in youth *No long-term marriage or life partner *Chronic physical pain? *Possible opiod addiction & all that brings *Inability to trust others due to your fame
So what did he get instead of these? His gift of music, material wealth, and a deep faith in God. I don't really think the wealth meant all that much to him when you look at how he lived his life. Just look at what he said in his music, "In this life...you're on your own!" Just my thoughts on a Wednesday night. Comments? thedance said: wow, u are really something.. wow, so very muthaf*cking negative u are.. Agreed. Similar to the previous thread accusing Prince of 'mocking God' and 'satanism', most of the protagonists joined prince.org after Prince's death and have their own biased agenda. The same applies here.

Double agreed. You know when some starts a post with the first line like this you're in for a bumpy ride. Gross.

What I was trying to emphasize was that although he faced lots of adversity in his life, he was still able to triumph over it! Sometimes it seems like people just want to start a big controversy about what anyone writes. Lots of individuals have faced less and just quit trying. I think everyone needs to queue up some purple party music!!! Good morning children...take a look out your window, the world is falling...

I'm not sure I understand your response here; the OP is simply pointing out that with Prince's fantastic gifts, there's the possiblity that the adversity in his life shaped that artist that we came to know and love. Would he be that Prince if he weren't short? Or abused? Or any of the other things that shaped who he was that caused his gift to flourish?
It takes a mature mind to wonder about these things, and I think people that are afraid to respond in the way that you did.

So, you're saying that a certain amount of "p^ssy" equates to lifelong happiness? that it somehow mitigates terrible things you may have experienced as a child?
And, Prince himself has said that many of his "friends" were in fact not friends at all.
Again, the OP is a valid comment on what perhaps made Prince and how he overcame/conquered it.

There is nothing in the original post suggesting Prince's triumph over adversity. Rather, it draws attention to allegedly negative elements Prince experienced in an attempt to imply his success came with a cost. It is the kind of idea popular among people who like to find fault with successful people and imply they're not truly happy or fulfilled. Tragedy befalls most people whether they're successful or not. None are immune.

Wow.... I do not understand all the agression that comes loose following OP’s post. The things said seem legitimate. Prince was a musical genius, had many fine women, lots of money, but in the end that did not bring him all the happiness he deserved. That’s something I feel sorry for (being a father of a son myself)...

We know Prince was experiencing some physical pain due to years of touring, but that is all. Anything else is pure conjecture.

Listen 2 AOA I've listened to AOA, along with every other Prince album. The original post is still conjecture and the language used in no way indicates any kind of positive triumph over adversity, thus the negative responses here.

says you. I read it and I think it quite clearly indicated that Prince positively triumphed over adversity.
Maybe some of you need to open up a bit and maybe think critically about things that don't on its face confirm some kind of bias you might have?

How clearer could he be in his own words?

How clearer could he be in his own words? I am not stating that Prince did not triumph over tragedy. I am stating that was not the intent of the original post. As I stated before, no-one is immune to tragedy and hardship and Prince was no exception. Connecting those difficulties to his gift and success and directly comparing them, as the poster did (along with references to a 'higher power' and acceptance on faith alone) changes the tenor entirely.

potatoe, patato...I read it and thought it was quite profound to connect his adversites to his gifts. Again, the verses in "Way Back Home", I think, speak to this in a very obvious way.

Well, it has been interesting to say the least. I love the music Prince created for all of us to enjoy for generations to come. I listed some of what may (we can never confirm all these) have been some of the things he went though while here. I guess I should leave God out of my posts, 'cause that really sets some people on fire. Can't though, because I believe in him. Some of the things I listed were things we shared: not having biological children, being short, family problems with parents. Was thinking with empathy on these, not criticism although some may have decided that for themselves. You can't be criticised for things you had no control over. I guess what I was attempting to say was he was that he made a great success of his life in spite of it all! Just for me, I don't equate wealth with how happy you really are. ( lots of miserable rich people, of which prince was not one of) He had his god-given music, the love of all his fams, and an enduring faith. Those were his gifts to treasure, as we now treasure his memory. Good morning children...take a look out your window, the world is falling...

like the OperatingTheTan said above (very well said imo) we can't judge Prince and his life whether he was "happy" - or not because none of us knew him personally, [Edited 3/27/18 10:05am] Prince 4Ever.

My OP was not a judgement on Prince's life. How could you possibly criticise someone for their stature?? That is just DNA. I only listed the the hard things he probably went through. (Although a few are conjecture) This was just to show how even more amazing it was he wrote all the happy party music for the world in his time here. Isn't this supposed to be a place where we can talk about the artist we all admired without others trying to hack u up in pieces? Enough said....
