The vast majority are aware globally.

Prince is likely one of the most successful individuals to be identified with a symbol.

In occult terms, these originated historically as sigils with a specific spiritual meaning or frequency. In more recent years businesses have adopted them as logos and these are also instantly recognisable as the brand to most people.

Creating Prince’s “Love Symbol”

The creation of the Love Symbol occurred after a long, conceptual brewing
process that started as early as 1984 with the release of the hugely successful
album and film Purple Rain. Prince and his creative team introduced many
combinations of the male and female symbols prior to creating the final Love
Symbol. In 1992, Prince and his creative team engaged Monson, who was then
creative director and one of four partners of the Minneapolis firm HDMG, to
complete the design. Prince and Sotera put together a complete visual brief for
the Love Symbol, and Mitch and Lizz spent a couple late design nights before
landing on the final symbol design that was selected by Prince.

I think the symbol will live on for centuries.

What a logo, and what a way to define yourself.

Not even just younger people. Someone that was a 25 year old fan of prince in 1985 would be 57 years old now. P has fans now from young college kids to senior citizens, and less of people that aren't even fans of his know who that symbol refers to.

Some of you guys really need to get out more. Travel the world. Do you think people know about Prince and his symbol in Russia? China? Peru? Kenya? Even in my own country, once when I was wearing a symbol necklace, somebody asked me what it meant.
It's from Prince, I said.
Huh?
Don't tell me you don't know Prince.
Oh, Prince the singer!
That's right.

that's true, i could see large factions who don't know a thing about him. His eschewing of youtube, piracy did a pretty good job of keeping him out of the public eye. also, how many songs has he even had on the radio in the last 25 years? I'm talking what the stupid kids listen to? Not oldies stations. Hate to say it but I've been dissapointed and made to feel real old at times when i play his songs in bars. Some people even ask "who's song was that? Elton John?" Does it really matter though? I don't know, some of Elvis' greatest songs are totally unknown to most people, artistry/popularity don't always correlate. for me, it doesn't bother me when I play an elvis song from '54 and no one knows who it is, because, well because it was the very mystery of the music that moved me in the first place.

Hi Pete, nice to see you back. One thing I've noticed about bands playing in bars is that the old rock & roll tunes always did well. When a band started playing, say, Johnny B. Goode, girls and boys started dancing even if they didn't know who Chuck Berry was. So the power of music can still move people.

Prince 'owned' his name, the color purple and the symbol. No other artist could claim the same.

No.
I have this on my Sonata and Land Rover bumpers:
prince COEXIST prince
.
Only once in over a year has there been a reaction: on the freeway heading out of Las Vegas, a purple car pulled up next to us and the driver waved.
Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

I think so, but i guess i can't say globally one way or the other. I have the symbol on a bumper sticker and get honks, waves, and thumbs up all the tine, but i do live in MN. That being said i do travel frequently to and from colorado and texas to visit family members. I have two t-shirts with the symbol, and two symbol keychains. I have had people of all ages across the country instantly recognize his symbol when they see me representing. Everyone from flight attendants, to strangers in truck stops have said "cool shirt", or "i want that keychain" to me. LOL

ya, i saw a truck parked in a goodwill, the kind that looked like it would belong to a redneck and i saw the symbol, i smiled. It was maybe a month after prince died. The faithful won't forget. Prince was a little different from anything else we really saw in the "superstar" realm, a guy who had just as much in common with being a cult artist as with being a superstar, that is what he wanted and envisioned from early on however.

We're talking about the symbol, not colours. You see the Rolling Stones logo everywhere even on T-shirts worn by kids who are way too young to know anything about the Stones. Just like you see T-shirts with that iconic Che Guevara picture worn by kids who have no idea who he was. We really cannot say the same about Prince's symbol.

that does happen, never happened with me, i wore a che shirt but i knew about him and i knew/know the controversy about his politics. good point though, i'm sure a lot of people don't.

I have the symbol in purple on the back window of my 2001 ZX2 on the driver's side. It's not very big, only about 4 inches tall, so probably hard to see unless you're close enough. I have had people say 'Nice shirt!' when I have worn a couple of different Prince t's though. One time was at a Goodwill where the cashier, who just happened to come from Minneapolis, said it and we got into a discussion about Prince and what it was like living there (low minimum wages). He said he regretted never going to Paisley Park while Prince was still alive. He was in his mid twenties, I think.

The thing about the symbol is, people aren't going to just wear it... Eventually someone is going to ask what it represents and want to learn more about it...and who it symbolizes.
