Yeah I remember that from a long time ago.

But it is clear, that Prince mixes the inspiration with a romantic love.

I think it's probably not safe to assume all songs around this period were inspired by Susannah. The song is a lament, and she certainly wasn't going anywhere at that point. It wouldn't make sense. Of course, if he wrote it in 1987 or so, it would have a solid place in Susannah-lore.

It also kills the story by Jerome Benton that Prince wrote the song about a breakup Jerome had from a girlfriend; a claim he made in recent years.

Just a quickie note about Susannah: Many think "Strange Relationship" is about her, too. It isn't. It's about Vanity (as was "Wonderful Ass" of course). It was written way before Susannah.

The song truly is one of Prince's best-written songs. I am enjoying his version of it, too. Even the leaked version with Paul doesn't have all this original stuff in it. Paul released the leaked earlier version (with the time-ticker percussion) back in 2004 or so I think. But this version seems to have even more instrumentation on it than Paul's copy.

A note about Sinead from the article, whether Prince liked her version or not, he needed the influx of money. Paisley Park was starting to bleed money a lot around 1990. He wasn't broke of course, but he needed some positive cash flow. Her cut of NC2U certainly brought in some big paychecks for him. I never minded her version. Frankly, as a Prince fan, it was fun to hear people loving the song in 1990, then I would pull out the cassette and say "Okay but here's the real version". They were never not amazed by The Family's version.

It looks like she passed away in the summerv of 2015 (in Texas) as well, maybe it was adding to his growing sense of depression that his true friends were all leaving him (or were for sale).

The Special Thanks in the D&P booklet says a lot.
The cashing in was certainly a good thing,
but I think Sinéas's hit it gave Prince a confidence boost
in his capabilities more than anything. The decade career turn is always delicate.
"Am I still relevant" and all this shit.

Why does everyone take what Susan Rogers says as the Almighty Truth!!! A housekeeper really? This is the same woman who said the Beautiful Ones was about Susannah.....Prince got everyone straight on that.... I say again NC2U was written for Jerome Benton about what he was going through with his ex.

It's true that Susan Rogers can get on one's nerves.
On one hand she says "it's all very burry, it was constant work", and then she seems to interpret lot of stuff by observing Prince's interactions with others.
But she often forgets to mention she only saw Prince's life in the studio,
and most of the time from behind a console,
and sometimes even through video monitors.

But I'll always give her credit for the incredible dimensions she and David Z.
got out of Prince's experiments with sounds from 1984 to 1988.
