ANOTHERLOVE Hello, Does anyone know what Prince is screaming at the end of this song: "U used to think I was so much fun Now I'm just the guilty one Everything we used 2 share Our clothes and even our hair. Now all U see is what I did ? But how come I can't tell me that kid (<>) ? Behind my back I'm just a so and so But I'm the greatest living soul U'll ever know" The lyrics are pretty revealing, if true.

I remember them mentioning how he wore her clothes and how she influenced his decision to go natural). I guess the rest of the song is a cover. I am surprised at how specific those lyrics I quoted were IF its true that they are about Andy. The lyrics suggest to me that he is guilty of something that she couldnt get over even though they shared so much in good times. I still dont understand the 'cant tell me that' lyric. Is he saying that he should be able to do whatever it is that he is guilty of? Also, the way the song ends hits me as 'you said I was nothing special/only so so but I'm the greatest there ever was and you will never find another like me'. I could be interpretting the lyrics wrong though thats why I'm curious about what others think.

When he sang the line "Now I'm just the guilty one" I have to admit it made me curious about what he meant by that. I'm not hearing "Can't tell me that" Yes,I think he's saying that he knew she was saying things about him behind his back but that he was the greatest and she would never find anyone greater. It does seem he's referencing Andy with the clothes and hair mention and also calling her "kid." but I guess it's left up to speculation.

I just wish I could make out that line that ends in 'kid'. He screams it at exact time that the music almost drowns his voice out. I must admit that it was kinda offputting to hear him basically say 'I'm guilty of what I did but I'm still the greatest and you wont find anyone better'... even though that probably was true, lol. It sounds like it would have been frustrating being in a relationship with someone like him. Bless his soul.

I agree! I love the solo at the end too.

I've never noticed that part.I'll have to listen again. One of the interesting things about Prince's music is that he usually put so many layers and little touches in a song that there's always something new to discover. It does seem that's what he was basically saying and yes, I agree. He sounded very angry with whoever it was directed to at that moment.

I hadnt thought of 'how come I cant' meaning how come he cant see what he did wrong. I was reading it as 'how come I cant do what I did (even if it was wrong)'. I think the word 'kid' was a salt on the wound kind of thing. Those age gaps had never stopped him in the past. Just sayin. Lyrics are fascinating.

'kid' was something he called this woman in private. It could have been a play on words / term of endearment that only they were aware of. I guess we wont know for sure.

He also said something like that during his live performances of The Sweeter She Is in 2013.He said to the audience 'Ya'll don't know what she did. This woman left me for another brother, another 23 year old kid." I agree that he's saying he can't see what he did wrong. [Edited 4/7/18 16:55pm]

So maybe 'she' left 'him, however he acknowledges being guilty of something that she couldnt look past. Hmmm. Famous folks really just are like the rest of us with regard to relationships. It sounds like he might have been struggling to understand how a 23 year old man could be a better option than a wiser/sexier/funnier/worldier 50 year old man. This actually makes a lot of sense if the older man sees his age as a positive thing or is of the mindset that 'age aint nothing but a number' in terms of relationships with younger women. Must be shocking if that younger woman chooses 'anotherlove' who is her own age.

Unless he was shifting the blame onto her,I don't know.He does seem to be acknowledging his guilt over something that she couldn't forgive. It does make you wonder what happened.X's Face on Phase 1 has a similar theme of his woman leaving him for another man.I agree that Prince probably did not see his age as an issue but more as an asset in the relationship and seemed to be saying he was surprised that she would want a guy or "kid" her own age.Andy also has a similar lyric as his "Used to think I was so much fun" in her song Into The Wild she sings"We used to be fun" and I wondered if that was her reply to him.

This song should of received tons of airplay...Still not too late..Rock that way it's supposed to be..Raw,powerful,great lyrics, great riffs.. As far as my opinion on what he means.. To me..it always sounded like he didn't know why he was the "guilty"He's asking why..Was it because he wasn't fun anymore? It seemed like a question not an admission..And I also assumed it was Andy..same reasons as others noted. Until the end of time

Interesting, because I really don't know but everytime I would listen to it I thought about Mayte You said I was what you wanted
I tried to be what you wanted,
and then Manuela The house we use to share it's now
In the past he's been known for songs where one portion of the lyrics are about one thing and then the next set of lyrics are about something/someone else, so maybe that's the case here.
All I know is that while I like the song, I don't really like to listen to it because whomever the song was about, it's makes me sad to think that he would have to endure fake love and insincere people pretending like they loved him, because he deserved so much better. But then I'm like, well, he should have changed up the physical prototype and maybe he would have gotten better results. Then I think, well that's being mean and so I move on to something else... yeah I know TMI, time to log off

Great song; love Prince's version of it. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

[Edited 4/7/18 15:55pm] My interpretation is that while he was going out with Andy he was still banging every other woman in sight. Because he's Prince. And when she left him because he was cheating on her he felt he hadn't done anything wrong. He's Prince and it's his god given right to fuck anything with a skirt and a pulse so as far as he was concerned, he doesn't feel like he's in the wrong. He's just doing what he's always done. I'm kind of half joking with that analysis but if it turned out to be 100% on the money, I wouldn't be surprised.

Either way, I think its a great song. His version is awesome.

And what he added to it lyrically and musically was what I believe most of the people on this post are talking about. His words.. Until the end of time

I would hope that this is not what happened but I wouldnt be surprised if it did turn out that way. A lot of the ones who 'got away'mentioned similar stories... Vanity, Melvoin, etc. Basically he was wonderful until he got bored and cheated, but if she left because of that and threw the good times/deep relationship away over a little thing like cheating then he couldnt understand that. Why throw away a good thing? It might be harder than we thought for a zebra to change his stripes or for an old dog to unlearn his old tricks. We may never know how it all went down but we know Andy mentioned that Prince taught her all about heartbreak so who knows.

With some of the posts that Andy made on social media back then and what she was saying in interviews that may have been what happened- plus what she said about heartbreak. As you mentioned, the other women all had similar stories.Prince was also carrying on during his shows about someone being unfaithful to him at the time so she may have been guilty of something as well.I think Prince's frustration and anger at the situation came through in the song and it seems very authentic to me.In the video,he also seemed to be really feeling it.

Maybe she cheated because he cheated however I sometimes think that P didnt consider what he was doing as 'cheating'. There can be levels of cheating, lol. You know how making out is cheating for some but oral isnt? I know folks who are like that. I digress. It seems like the age gap (and lifestyle differences) could have definitely impacted the way things ended for these two. All speculation though.

I've considered that as well. That's a possibility also that he didn't see what he did as cheating while perhaps she did.She did say in summer of 2013 that she was relating to Long Gone,a song on her album written by Prince so it seems something along those lines happened. The lyrics speak of the sadness and frustration of being in love with someone who has difficulty with faithfulness in a relationship and the realization that they will never change and making the difficult decision to leave.

Given that Andy and Prince worked on Long Gone together, why would AA write it about P cheating on her or herself cheating on him? Neither of those scenarios makes any sense. She said in Summer of 2013 that she was relating to the scenario in the song and that it was "near and dear to her heart." Andy said in a 2014 interview on Upper Room with Joe Kelley that Prince wrote the song after they had listened to Fire and Rain at Paisley Park and he was inspired to try to and "come up with something better" The song is about the one you love finding someone else and replacing you with them.
