"Prince Class"...haha what is that. I too am guilty of having made my friends, colleagues, and my young cousins listen to Prince's music, but I'd never want to "teach" or "explain" Prince's musicality to people who barely know his music or don't even like his songs. That'd be a waste of my time and energy and probably theirs too.
Anyways...never met any non-Prince fan who didn't like my easy-bets - Purple Rain, Beautiful Ones, the Cross, etc....but I'm surprised to hear college students endured through the entire Batman soundtrack. And Parade too? Nevermind what they thought of those albums, a non-Prince fan listening to entire albums like those is...kind of shocking to me already..!

Might be a good way of introducing potential new fans to his music though. If you can reach just one person who digs it, maybe it's worth the effort!?

You can't 'teach' Prince. You have to feel it. That's why I have no time to these university disections of his work.

To quote White Men Can't Jump...."Look man, you can listen to Jimi but you can't hear him. There's a difference man. Just because you're listening to him doesn't mean you're hearing him."

Completely off topic, but today I was marking some of my 13 years old students’ Spanish work and one of them had written in her book, next to a photograph of the super bowl, ‘I like this photograph of prince with a purple guitar; his guitar was as famous as him, because he played the guitar a lot. I love listening to Prince because he’s really cool; however Juistin Bieber repulses me’. There is hope, after all...

My 12 year old niece surprised me with her love of Prince. She told me she loved Sexy MF. I said who is letting you listen to that???LOL. her brother said the only good Prince song was When Doves Cry however. I said you need to listen to more Prince..He did't argue. My son at first wasn't crazy about Prince. NOw he loves him and compares modern music he doesn't like to the superior work of Prince Rogers Nelson. We were talking about Timberlake becuase I used to play Future Sex/Love Sounds in the car. He told me he didn't like Timberlake's songs all that much (especially that song from Trolls) or his singing voice (the falsetto) as much as P's. I said Well, Prince sings with a falsetto. And he said he thought Prince's falsetto fit his music better. I said because it is funkier? and he said "Yep"...LOL.

Haha, maybe. But I'm at peace with the idea of most youngsters not being familiar with Prince's work. We all like who we like. I'll just have to come back here on the org for level-headed Prince related discussions which I'm happy to do so anyway.

I agree except about Batman being better than Lovesexy. Just NO.

It's a shame new fans have missed on on the context in which those albums were recorded and released.

However it's just a different experience rather than right or wrong.

lol

You might not be able to "teach" it, but you can expose people to it. They can't feel it if they don't know about it.
