And I don't understand why people are poo-pooing Purple Rain Deluxe. Regardless of its issues, we still recieved a number of gems in better quality than previously available plus a few songs we didn't even know existed.

We knew all those songs existed.

.

Problems with PR Deluxe:

- Awful sound glitches on 2 tracks. No apologies nor any compensation offered by WB to consumers.

- Absence of several single edits and audio versions of the music videos.

- Absence of the music videos on the DVD.

- At least some, if not all of the tracks featured on the outtakes CD come from cassettes, not the original vault tapes. This has been denied by some WB representatives but later acknowledged by at least one person involved in the process.

- Uneven sound quality on said outtakes because of eneven sources.

- Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden apparently a "fanmade" mashup made by WB from 2 separate cassettes, with the transition between both tracks apparently not faithful to the original transition

- The Dance Electric not in its final form (granted, it's nice to have a work in progress version, but should it have been the first version released?)

- Gross errors in titles and liner notes regarding the recording dates for some of the tracks.

- Amateurish claims by WB that 17 Days Extended could not be included because it does not exist while it does, in fact, exist.

- I can't tell about that because I'm not an audiophile/videophile, but there have been numerous complaints regarding the overall sound and picture quality on the DVD and CD's.

- Did I forget something?

.

I'll admit that it was still super cool to have the outtakes CD and an improved sounding version of the Syracuse show but nevertheless the list of problems with this release is simply too long. One or 2 problems would have been OK maybe, it didn't have to be perfect, but here let's be honest: it's a train wreck. If WB had stepped out and honestly addressed the issues, explained the difficulties they had faced for example when it came to sourcing the tracks, and the reason behind some of their choices, as well as apologized for at least the sound glitches and liner notes errors, it would haver been OK: at least we'd know they'll try and do better next time. But here I fail to see why we should be nice to them.

Word? I thought the studio version of Electric Intercourse was only rumored to exist before Warner released it as the first single and a number of tracks were only circulating with the upper elite of traders.

Purple Rain Deluxe wasn't perfect by any means but people should be grateful for what they got. It isn't like it was a luxury release. $25 for three cds and a dvd was a bargain...even if there was some minor mistakes and a dud version of Roadhouse Garden.

Plus the music videos ended up on YouTube so I'm not exactly heartbroken they weren't included on the DVD. At least they were smart enough to include PCM loseless audio.

I think most fans would rather have paid more for a better product. Of course the general public has no clue of any of the problems on it, so I guess for them a cheaper price was a smartest move.
even if there was some minor mistakes and a dud version of Roadhouse Garden.
Messing up with OD/RG was unforgivable IMHO. That's actually the ONE thing that infuriates me the most. They could just as well have had Justin Timberlake remix Electric Intercourse!
Plus the music videos ended up on YouTube so I'm not exactly heartbroken they weren't included on the DVD.
I'll give you that. But still it would have been nice and easy to do.
At least they were smart enough to include PCM loseless audio.
On the DVD you mean? I assume it's not possible to put Lossless on YT?

From what I understand, Purple Rain and Parade are different from any other Prince album, because they are tied to WB movies and thus the rights are different (which isn't the case for Sign Of The Times or Graffiti Bridge).

I'm really not sure where this comes from: that info appeared out of the blue a few months ago but it sound very much to me like something someone made-up that's been so often repeated that it's become "true".

Besides, PR, Parade and Batman are usually mentionned but not GB... except GB is also connected to a WB movie!

I think it's just a BS rumor, but I might be wrong.

.

You may well be right. The Batman album is different regardless though, as it wasn't a Paisley Park album. I hope that it will become clear in time. I do fear that there are legal complications that will delay future releases, much like the legal complications that killed the publishing contract.

.

As it is now, I'd take a 1999 deluxe or Parade deluxe. I hope they'll be able to do more than 1 per year.

According to Alan Leeds no Prince albums were ever contractually Paisley Park records, the PP logo was just stuck on them to give the label some visibility. Prince was directly under contract with WB. Same with Sheila and a few other early PP acts such as The Family and probably Mazarati and Taja as well. It's not before 1987 that artists were properly signed to the label, but Prince never was.

I like these ideas, but my 2 cents would love to add a Parade live in Paris element that could include the sound check and soundboard audio of the aftershow at the New Morning Club, and of course the main show at Le Zenith with a clean (without overdubs) version of it’s gonna be a beautiful night.
The house cut video would also be greatly appreciated especially if it exists in full length.

What Alan didn't say is why WB refused to put the PP logo on Batman. Only a technicality but I'd like to know nevertheless.
