Listen to this from 2:40 onwards

For whatever reason I love the song "Planet Earth" and it is really is soaked with a late 70's mood, and.... I need to reserach this out.. but... something takes me to the slasher film relseased on 1980 "Prom Night" specifically the reveal part where some kid has fallen out a window in a flashback. I havenb't seen that since 1982... so it's a stange association.

That mid-section does have a certain yacht rock appeal to it. For You certainly does.

Did you hear it from 2:40, the piano solo?

Yes 2.40 is the Could It Be Magic bit.
You can sing ‘spirits move me every time I’m near you’ to it.
My mother was a big Barry fan in case you’re wondering. Honestly

Wait, you are saying that from 2:40 onward in “Sailing” by Christopher Cross is lifted from the Manilow song “Could it Be Magic”???

I’m talking about listening from 2:40 onward in “Sailing”, you don’t have to sing lyrics... its an instrumental break and I’m comparing it to the instrumental break in “Planet Earth”

I'm not saying that. I've never heard of Sailing by Chris Cross. Keep me out of any plagiarism cases

Love 2 the 9's started out like it could have been a classic but then the rap intrudes like an unwanted dinner guest.

I agree. The beginning is amazing, then it all becomes painful... the edited version is a bit better.

The beginning and very end of this song are amazing. Some of Prince’s best work. The mess of bad hip hop chants in the middle is a travesty, topped off by painful “damn girl, let me see the booty boom” nonsense. This might be Prince’s worst “hip hop” moment (if you can even call it hip hop).

Man. ..you're all ignoring the wonderful pieces of jam hamming it up, the brass the piano, the phenomenal drum tripping, the atypical wonderful snare choice, on the downbeat. ...that song's great as-is!
i hate the video edit version...the song is interesting as heck and doesn't lose ME....maybe others.

That song, just reminds me of women with big perms and green bead necklaces and the 1970s. Yacht Rock the term has always made me laugh - but what in God's name is Yacht rock. I was born in 76 so are not fully familiar with music before 1982/83 like you guys are.

.

This is Kath Day Knight and Yootha Joyce set to music though.

Christopher Cross used to front a band called Heather Black, and they played the skating rink in my hometown quite often. I remember Cross as a pudgy dude who could sing.

Then I went to college, and Cross went solo. My frat booked him to play one of our parties. But inbetween the booking and the party, his single "Ride Like The Wind" was released went to #2. He sent us a note saying that he'd be unable to make our party, as he was now the hottest singer in America. But he did give us a copy of his album, LOL.

I got to see him perform a couple years ago. He can still hit the high notes! I got to go backstage, and I wanted to tell him "No hard feelings for dumping us back in 1980!" but he didn't receive any visitors.

I think if I could remove the vocals of the middle section I would agree with you on the bass, piano, drums... but that rap or chanting or whatever it is...

Always feel like this song escapulates the best and worst of Prince in 1 song. The instrumentation, the passion in the singing, the guitar playing are all representative of him at his peak power. On the other hand, the corny lyrics, the cheesy musical theater midsection, and the weird sudden ending stink up the joint. biggrin What other songs are like this?

LOL

So that is what I've been feeling from this song. I enjoy it imensly

That 'cheesy musical theater midsection' lol that is what I've always felt about it, and would just blank out until it was over. The 'synth' sounded cheap. But the rest of the song was awesome and give me chills.

I don't think the lyrics are corny though.

Starting to realise I like a lot of yacht rock, Christopher Cross, Styx, Player, Little River Band, Paul Davis, Air Supply, Hall and Oates, Randy Vandewarmer, Ace, Juice Newton (Possibly more country), I just sound tacky I know.

.

Would you guys count George Benson as Yacht rock, I know he is black and jazz pop, but a lot of white People I know seem to like his music, and it is smooved out like all the rest of Yacht rock, if funkier and for that matter we could add How bout us by Champaign and Just the two of us by Grover Washington. So basically is there room for Black guys on the yacht?

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

This is 150 % the worst offender.

"Love 2 The 9s" has a beautiful soundscape, great mellow groove and a gorgeous Prince vocal. It's perfect up until the rap interlude hits you like a fucking hammer. Takes a 5 song to a 3.5/4.
