They've grown on me as well. Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden, She's Always In My Hair, and Girl should've been on Around The World In A Day.

I agree 100%. I don’t like the version with Jill Jones’s vocals much, either.

Roadhouse Garden has a special emotional appeal to me that is hard to put into words. On the first few listens (whether the boot or the PR-Deluxe versions), the simplicity of the song struck me as indicative of being somewhat substandard for Prince. After several listens the simpliicity of the song is perfect in that showcases Prince's subtle yet emotionally resonant vocal performance. The song seems both sweet but somehow melancholy at the same time, which actually gives it complexity despite the surface simplicity. As far as Our Destiny, it's decent but not a grower like Roadhouse.

I love both. Of course my first listen was the 6.7.194 Birthday show... AWESOME

.

Roadhouse Garden is so celebratory, so hippie, I think of this song when listening to Teacher Teacher

.

Our Destiny is grand. I would have loved to hear this song on an album. If Prince was to do an album that followed Purple Rain more directly Our Destiny would be a wonderful opening.

.

Our Destiny
Dance Electric

Manic Monday

Love & Sex

We Can Fuck

and some other PR outtakes

.

I love all 3 vocal takes on Our Destiny. Like a lot of Prince songs there are these angles or perspectives you get when Prince sings it, when Lisa sings it, when Jill sings it.

.

I actualy place Lisa first Prince 2nd Jill 3rd

Unfortunately, it seems the official versions are a "fanmade" (by WB) mashup of 2 separate tracks, with Lisa's version possibly substituted to Jill's and segued too early into RH.

My kids love Roadhouse Garden. And to a lesser extent Our Destiny. They suprisingly loved the long version of computer Blue and possessed. Needless to say, they haven't heard We can Fvck yet...(they are 10 and 12)

And Hello.

Hello happened just a bit too late to be on the album, I believe. But definately recorded after the album was released

With so much change it would have been another album entirely (or a double album). The thing with Prince is that he apparently cared a lot not just about putting the best tracks on albums but about putting the right tracks in the right order to make a cohesive statement (see how incredible tracks were often removed from a tracklist: the extended Computer Blue, All My Dreams, Crystal Ball, etc.

.

Typically, I'd say RG couldn't have been on ATWIAD alongside Paisley Park because lyrically, both tracks deliver more or less the same message: one had to go and PP was the logical choice, given that it's at the same time more psychedelic and more original, not to mention that Prince was so attached to the concept of "Paisley Park" that he named both his label and his studio like that.

.

I can't tell what Prince thought of it but while OD/RG made for one of the most formidable live transition of P's career on stage, I believe the studio versions, once they had taken the direction they'd taken after the bday show, don't really work together anymore at all: they are thematically disconnected and the transition does little save ruining the dramatic tension installed all throughout OD.

.

What OD became is a fascinating piece of music, the way the melody and orchestra play the "give, then take back" game together is remarkable but ending as it does, it seems unfinished, as if it needed to develop into a less sparse, more complex composition for another 8 minutes or so. I really wonder whether Prince would have considered releasing it as such. The track is also so strong and so odd that it could have been the central piece of another record: it literally embodies the constant "tension inside the sweetness", as TTD would say, that was omnipresent in Prince's music at the time. But I don't think it really would have fit as such on ATWIAD.

.

As for She's Always and Girl, well, Prince often had to make radical decisions and exlude great tracks. ATWIAD wasn't really an album about romance, with only RB really addressing the subject (and as a proper narrative, something not so common in Prince's songwriting). I guess it was a conscious move to further distance ATWIAD from Purple Rain, a record largely centered on romance. So I guess it make sense to keep them for b-sides in favor of tracks that addressed a wider series of themes. Also, Girl only really flies in its extended form, that may have been too long for a 45 minutes record. Anyway, if I remember Duane's book correctly, it seems none of those songs was ever considered for ATWIAD (someone correct me if I'm wrong), so the decidion to keep OD/RG in the vault and to use Always and Girl as b-sides came later in the process (Girl hadn't even been reworked by the time ATWIAD was completed, and it's even possible that it was finished after the album was released, specifically with making it a b-side in mind).

I'm part-way through the book about the Purple Rain sessions, and if I remember correctly, it mentioned something about an entirely separate P&TR album that was in progress between Purple Rain and ATWIAD. The author didn't seem to elaborate or follow up on that bit though (unless it happens later and I haven't gotten there yet lol). Was there actually a different album planned before Prince started putting the pieces together that became ATWIAD, or was this 'separate album' just an early configuration of ATWIAD that changed drastically into the final album?

Here is the 1984/85 painting by Neon Park that was allegedly the album art for the pre-ATWIAD album

I wanted to start a thread about this, but considering how no one ever takes part in my threads I thought I’d save myself the disappointment lol
I remember reading somewhere that Wendy and Lisa claimed that when they left there were four Prince and a The Revolution albums finished and ready to go. I assume Dream Factory was one, and this was probably another one. Any information on what the other two would have been?

Maybe they ment 4 albums worth of material? Or maybe they considered DF as two albums (it was going to be a double album, wasn't it?). Or maybe they were taking liberties with the truth (it wouldn't be the first time)?

It's insane I don't remember any mention of it in Duane's book. I read it so fast and there was so much data to absorb. I'll read it again and take notes later this year.
