Who of Prince's contemporaries did he REALLY like? And privately listen too and be inspired by?? I get a sense that Prince truly loved these artists and bands and privately listened to them for inspoiration and enjoyment...
James Brown (of course...) Joni Mitchell (duh...) Jimi Hendrix Carlos Santana The Beatles and/Led Zeppelin (after W&L exposed him to them...) Milles Davis Gladys Knight The Staples Singers The Ohio Players

The Cars (he loved the song DRIVE, supposedly) The Talking Heads (he often spliced parts of The Talking Heads songs in his pre-show soundcheck jams, especially in the 1999 Era...) Gary Numan (HUGE influence on 1999)

They released the playlist that Prince put together for his house party on New Girl with some of his favorite artists and songs.I made my own playlist from it.He had some nice songs on it.He also put together a playlist for 3rd Eye TV that included Fleetwood Mac,Marvin Gaye,Al Green,Dionne Warwick and Sade.He seemed to regularly listen to Bill Withers,Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles as well. Apparently he was a Cocteau Twins fan! This fact always surprises me, on the whole he seemed to be influenced more by classic 60s fare (James Brown, Sly, Hendrix etc), rather than contemporary alternative stuff from the 80s. | |
