In the PRS (UK performing rights organisation) database, Soft And Wet is also down under an alternative title of Soft And White. So racist wink

Not sure about your numbers. The Greatest Hits packages which sold well gave Moon thousands in royalties (Industry Rate= .091 * Numbers sold). That song will be sold forever. Not to mention possible movies, commercials, performances. I agree that the song’s value has probably peaked, but you never know with future WB marketing plans and use.

.091 of what? and is that not cut in half? And with 10 songs (really more on average) that becomes less than half a cent per. But at 22Million that is 990K. So maybe it will pay for itself.

And those are just USA album sales. If this song makes its way into a movie or commercial, the buyer will hit the jackpot.

Okay maybe not now, but in the Slavery and Jim Crow era it was. Prince was born in 1958 after all and his parents were southern Blacks. The name is a bit out of date then and very so now.

.

It is like someone naming their child really old names like Archibald, Edmund, Ethel, Maud, Clorine, Arlene and Obadiah I guess.

[Edited 2/12/18 19:31pm]

I don't think that can even be backed that up, that Prince was a common name during the Slave and Jim Crow period in America. Maybe as a middle name or nickname?

names like Sunday Tuesday April May June August December Christmas America Easter were regular slave names
.
I mean you started out saying it was a very common name in America, then switched to it being a common name during the slavery and Jim Crow period. Did you get that from a site called Behind the Name?

.

.

...naming your child Prince or Princess is just setting them up for teasing

...sounds like a gay man's nickname...

.

.

My parents both mixed race born in the 1940s have never know a person of color named Prince

I'm not saying there were no people named Prince(outside of Prince Rogers Nelson) but Prince wasn't/isn't a common name

.

I know of an actress named Countess, Gulianna DePandi gave her son the middle name Duke

.

Prince might have been a popular middle name?

.

Royalty names just sound like names you would call a pet dog cat bird or horse

Whether it was or not, the fact remains, that some folks were naming their kids Prince, before and after our Prince was born.

.

Names for slaves like the ones above were for ignorant owners in the 1800s. More informed ones called their slaves names like Lovely, Jolly, Handy (Handy Jenkins - Prince's great great grandfather), Albert, Charles, Thomas, Toby, Fiddler etc.

.

The most advanced antebellum ones used classical names that sounded glamorous and some what humiliating like Pompey, Caesar, Scipio Africanus (An actual Roman general from about 200BC who subdued the Carthaginians and gave the dark continent its name), Hannibal, Lucretia, Lucinda, Poppaea Sabina, Gnaeus, Gaius, Cassius, Cleophus, Cleopatra, Aphrodite, Mercury, Jugurtha (A king of Numidia), Julius, Marcus and such names were common in the 1700s too.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Here is a giraffe named after Prince.

according to the zoo, that they chose the name “in memory of one of the greatest musicians, songwriters, producers and cultural icons of our time, Prince Rogers Nelson. Prince was a proud and generous Minnesotan. The incredible innovation and groundbreaking change that he brought to several music genres, as well as the music industry itself, will be forever inspiring and never forgotten.”

no, what would happen is the name on the royalty checks changes. but owning half the song, in this case, doesn't come with ANY authority as to its use. Prince was advised (by Chris or Owen) to create a publishing company... all the publishing rights were retained by Prince's publishing company Ecnirp... (yes I have known that for decades) so Chris never had any say and neither will anyone that buys his share.

Then he is trying to sucker people with that price

Exactly, and even if Encirp and the Prince estate interfering, would this song realistically get you back your initial investment?

.

It would be hard to make $500k out of Kiss or Alphabet Street let alone "Soft and Wet". Very few people other than Prince fans and possibly a few people who remember MC Hammer nearly 30 years ago back in the 20th century would remember that mess and most of the 12 year old mouthbreeders who bought Hammer would hardly know the name of the sampled songs (Of which there were heaps on that album like When Doves Cry and Superfreak by Rick James).

.

I would say leave this Turkey alone and he needs to drop it to a more realistic price like say $2,000 or so with Lawyers verifying it. Chris seems to think it is valuable as its old and his first chart song - but really it is a minor part of Prince's legacy.

Prince Hall Black Abolishnist

rince Hall (c. 1735–1738—1807)[1] was an African American noted as an abolitionist for his leadership in the free black community in Boston and as the founder of Prince Hall Freemasonry. He lobbied for education rights for black children and was active in the back-to-Africa movement.

Hall tried to gain New England’s enslaved and free blacks a place in Freemasonry, education and the military, which were some of the most crucial spheres of society in his time. Hall is considered the founder of “Black Freemasonry” in the United States, known today as Prince Hall Freemasonry. Hall formed the African Grand Lodge of North America. Prince Hall was unanimously elected its Grand Master and served until his death in 1807.

Steve Gladstone, author of Freedom Trail Boston states that Prince Hall—known for his role in creating Black Freemasonry, championing equal education rights, and fighting slavery—"was one of the most influential free black leaders in the late 1700s."[2]

There is confusion about his year of birth, place of birth, parents, and marriages–at least partly due to the multiple number of "Prince Halls" during this time period.

Turkey?! Cmon man. You all are underestimating what the song ownership and publishing of a song can potentially mean...especially the first historic single from an iconic artist. This song will be repackaged forever. It was recently on a hit compilation Greatest Hits album. Eventually there will be documentaries and a crappy big budget bio movie about Prince.

I am not saying that it will hit the jackpot, but its value is not nothing.

Unrelated Interesting Trivia Fact: Every Breath You Take by the Police has provided approximately 50% of all Sting/Police royalties (20 Mill +) through the years.

Every Breath You Take was a hugh record. Soft and Wet was not and it is too disco and dated. It might be some background music in something one day but the estate would have to clear it.

SNJ was already bitching about Let's Go Crazy" being in a film that they felt was too violent. Do you really think when the family takes over things are going to change and songs will suddenly strart appearing.

Only if they sell everything off.

Obviously I was not comparing it to one of the biggest songs of all time. The licensing of all Prince music all over the place is inevitable. The estate will not be doing all the heavy lifting in those decisions. Lets Go Crazy was just in a cheesy commercial with toe tags...so I’m not expecting a lot of commercial integrity. Hollywood WILL exploit Prince music.

You can’t see a Amy Winehouse doc or Ray Charles bio movie in the Prince’s future?
