Open Book

Really loving this song today.
PrinceVault is down I think.
Does anyone know who plays drums and bass on this track?
Really worth a listen if you haven’t heard it yet.

What I´ve noticed about this song is that it is one of those songs that almost every non-fan absolutely loves when they hear it. And they are often surprised when I tell them it´s Prince´s version of a song he gave to someone else.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Yet another example of his brilliance...that he'd give away a song this beautiful and never even look at it again (no performances)....amazing.

This was actually the first outtake I ever heard, almost thirty years ago now! Still one of my favourites, after all this time. I don’t care for Jevetta Steele’s version, though...

I can see how people might not think it’s Prince. It’s got more of a club vibe of those days. The song gets a lot of love on other threads here dating back to ‘92 (as early as I felt like going back). You had said almost verbatim what you said here. You are very consistent, KE.

Yes, and his generosity as part of that brilliance.

Actually I really wish Martika had recorded it as originally intended. Her soft voice would have been perfect for the track.
If only Martina could access the multitracks she could still do it now, that would be such a great homage to Prince and their classic collaboration.

I think this is why the Prince catalogue is a goldmine waiting to be used. When Prince passed away and there was talk of releasing this that or the other, This song immediately came to mind. Moonbeam levels is a song which appealed to his own core base. You could pathologically loathe Prince and love this song. It's pure, simple and beautiful but isn't wrapped in Prince flourishes, There are so many songs of this ilk.

Prince must surely be the first music star where you could genuinely create a new career post death. I don't mean nostalgis like Elvis , I mean release a new Pop album, Rock album, Jazz (yes I dare use that word musos) album with fanfare as a genuine new release. Marketed ( and I dont mean this as a criticism) without Prince's attention span.

Sales have always been hampered with a lack of time to digest a Prince album. It can never create its own momentum. God can you imagine today cutting an album on the scale of Purple Rain dead within less than a year of release. Not only with a new album but a persona that said "by the way the Purple Ruffle guy aint necesarily who you bought into". I think it took til about 1993 before people caught up to the idea that there was no such thing as Prince and an album was very much a wait and see scenario

I agree, jcurley, good point about his posthumous career. and Prince was definitely more than what most people think he was! This is what I try to transmit when I talk to those not in the know.
And I haven’t even gotten into the spiritual yet with them. That’s usually only for those with “ears to hear”.

I love this song and Jevetta Steele hella sang it out--her version is a clear standout to me. It's a done- me-wrong song sung so pretty that it gives me a smile. Nice to hear Prince's version, too. He harmonizes just the same and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he did sing backing vocals on her version.
