I think the show was great!

The medley-character and all the "breaks" within the songs were Prince-Like.

Justin and his musical director obviously showed that they are Prince-Fans by the way all the songs were presented.

And I'm glad Justin did not play "Purple Rain".

"I Would Die 4 U" was a wonderful choice.

Thank you Justin!

Timberlakeā€™s halftime show is getting panned. This was from the Washington Post. Ouch.

The grody metaphysics finally surface nine minutes into the show, when Princeā€™s voice is piped into the stadium and his image is projected onto a towering, billowing scrim. Timberlake has decided to drape an isolated vocal track of ā€œI Would Die 4 Uā€ over the oozing chords of his 2006 ballad ā€œUntil the End of Time,ā€ and it feels more like taking than giving. Prince didnā€™t die for Justin Timberlake, and he certainly didnā€™t die for this.

I didnā€™t think his performance overall was that great but IMO Prince ā€famsā€ need to get over the outrage and hatred of JT. Prince had no hatred of JT. JT even performed at one of his LA house parties. Thereā€™s a photo of it in Afshin Shahidiā€™s book.

O.k. So now we know who the gatekeeper of prince is...

But it was his cover of Prince's "I Would Die 4 U"ā€”along with a pre-recorded video of the late singer, displayed on a projection screenā€”that made headlines. Before the performance, amid premature complaints on social media, Prince's friend, Sheila E., said she'd talked to Timberlake and there would not be a "hologram."

Timberlake appeared on NBC's The Tonight Show after the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots, and he explained how the tribute to Prince came out. "It's a moment for me, if I'm being quite honest, because he's always been the pinnacle of musicianship for me. And when we decided that, like, the serendipity and synergy that we would be in Minneapolis, and that, you know, he's such a special thing here, aside from what he is all over the world, um, I just felt I wanted to do something for this city and something for him that, uh, would just be the ultimate homage to what I consider the GOAT [Greatest of All Time] of musicians," Timberlake said. "And also, I'm not gonna lie to you guys because Questlove is the encyclopedia on music, but also, like, I feel like a gatekeeper on Prince, so if I got the thumbs up from Quest, I'm good."

Why is quest love considered an authority on PRINCE and what should and should not be done. I get he dug him and jammed with him etc....but at the end of the day Prince was his own person, Quest Love had many negative opinions of what PRINCE was doing at times, from the internet to releases etc...so Quest Love giving a thumbs up who cares, is he running things ??As for JT it is what it is, you either liked it or not, I would have had more feelings for this performance if that "spirit of minneapolis" statement by JT was not utter BULLSHIT, spirit of Minneapolis with no one from that spirit on that stage, its not like ALL of Prince's bands musicians were not in town all week so something more creative could have been done. As for JT's overall show its getting horrible reviews musically for his choices of performing a mix of songs the dancing got OK reviews but him as a performer it was weak.

Quest Love made himself an authority and he is good at getting the media to buy into it. He had no affilation with the estate, family or even other associates.

I wish someone from any of those entities would come out and tell him where he can go with his bullshit.

Also thought itbwas interesting that Justin and jimmy talked at length about the prince part of the super bowl performance, but didn't even mention hologramgate...as if it was decided in advance it would not be brought up...hmmm...one would think Justin might have taken the opportunity to say the hologram was a rumor and he would never disrespect prince or his fans in that way...but we got crickets on that topic...

Another no so great review, from the Atlantic.

https://www.theatlantic.c...ssion=true
You could argue that some brief tribute was necessary and right, as this Super Bowl was in Princeā€™s hometown and Timberlakeā€™s music owes Prince a debt. In even the most charitable scenario, though, Princeā€™s role as the centerpiece of this particular set landed as a faux pas. If youā€™re going to use the guy as filler, at least give the appearance of trying as hard as he did.

Loads of bad reviews this morning. Outside of the activities in April I hope this is the last of the tributes. Last us get on with vault music and move forward.

If ā€œfamsā€ want to be mad be mad that Prince was filler in a halftime show that wasnā€™t very good. Thank god for the cutaway to the city lighting up purple. That was the best part of the halftime show.

Yeah Iā€™m Ok with putting a pause on tributes for a while. I have tickets to the April 21 show at Target Center but I might sell them because if itā€™s anything like the halftime show I think it could end up being cringeworthy. Iā€™m not sure I want to see that.

Made me cry (not a river). I think that was really dignified. Got to hand it to JT he utilised that whole stadium. Quite a feat and to be fair quite a spectacle.
Prince's was rated for pure musicianship but i think for general punter pretty mych craps on other half time shows.

For me considering MJ is very much about the vusual and pyrotechnics and nithing wrong with that. JT absolutely delivered on that realm of entertainment.

I can't believe some are praising Justin's "talent", much less his "sampling" of Prince for his performance.

It's likely that the purpose of the hologram "rumor" was so we would be so happy that it wasn't true that we wouldn't complain about the sampling of Prince's image and voice.

This was lazy, cheap and disrespectful. If he really wanted to honor Prince he could try actually singing one of his songs himself instead of just sampling him.

And, "I Would Die 4 U"? Really?!? That's just morbid.

Agree 1000% with this. It feels like a lot of people want to show unity by disliking everything that others are doing to honor him. That says more about them imo. I don't want Prince forgotten nor remembered because his fans don't appreciate anything done by others to honor him. No one is gonna ever be top-notch like Prince and I don't expect that.

Prince didn't want any type of virtual duets, and as mentioned, stated it explicitly in an interview.

I feel like this performance sort of straddles the line between virtual duet and tribute. I think Justin saved it by having the focal point be Prince, while singing back up to Prince's lead vocal. It's not a proper duet, like he did on the MJ track, where he takes the second verse.

The shot of Prince's silhouette from his own Super Bowl performance, and turning the city purple with the superimposition of the symbol was a nice touch, IMO. I'm from Minneapolis and I loved seeing my city like that.

I think the issue with I Would Die 4 U being the song choice is maybe an emotional projection from those of us still in mourning. I don't think it was intended to be morbid or disrespectful. Prince mentioned death and dying in a lot of his music.

The performance in general was just okay for me. It was good for him, but I just don't get very excited by Justin Timberlake. When I hear his music, I'm constantly yearning for a better vocalist to be on the track instead.

Ultimitely, I'm glad he tributed Prince in the way he did. He didn't have to, and I think his reverence for the man in genuine.

Your theory about the rumor could be true. The rumor came from TMZ so it was suspect from the very beginning.

I am not a Timberlake fan. However, he is an accomplished performer and musician. He's from Mississippi and plays well on stage with the big dogs when he chooses to. They don't let you dip in or out of the Memphis music scene otherwise.

The whole Superbowl half-time show is mega-hyped and meant to appeal to the most generic people/fans. Very few artists pull it off well or ever have in the past. The expectation of greatness is overwrought.

He was asked not to do what? He didnā€™t do a hologram. And weā€™ll probably never know if he was planning on doing one or not. Btw, Omarr gave the performance a thumbs up on Twitter. The problem is not with ā€œclosure.ā€ There is a vacuum of ā€œrealā€ Prince representation following his death. Put out real video, rare clips and serious documentaries. How many times, in these lame ass tributes, are they gonna trot out the same songs and cliches. He was not Mr. Purple Rain. He was a complex artist.

This tribute uses a rare Prince song, ā€œCalhoun Squareā€, respects the essence of P with amazing muscianship, and does not play to crass commercialism and nostalgia...the absence of art. https://m.youtube.com/wat...8F-tS8iF6c
