Are Prince fans music snobs????

I think we are. For some reason, we hold Prince up as this really deep and sophisticated artist and we trash everyone else. Like Eminem is beneath us to listen to. I think we got a lot of old folks here complainin' about the good ole days. "back in my day there was real music. now it's just noise, blah blah blah..."
"New Power slide...."

I think some Prince fans take both Prince and themselves way too seriously.

I think everybody who is a big fan of a particular artist, or who has a favorite artist who they admire and follow closely, feels that their favorite is the ultimate, most talented, most complex, most EVERYTHING, and feel their favorite is "better" than all others.

I've visited message boards and sites dedicated to other musical artists and it's interesting to me how many threads and topics there are EXACTLY the same as the ones you find on the Org, just with the other artist's name imposed instead of Prince's.

People on the Beck fansite feel he's the best, he's the most talented deep lyricist, the most innovative, etc. People on the Elvis Costello and Fleetwood Mac boards can debate for hours the intricacies of the songs and lyrics and origins of those artist's music, and why THEY are the best and are more musically valuable, talented, and worthwhile than anyone else.

Sometimes the opinions we hold are subjective.

Of course, other times we ARE VERY CORRECT in our opinion of Prince's superiority. I mean, compare Britney Spears' music and "talent" to Prince..NO CONTEST. mr.green

Every generation has it's own styles of music and dress and tends to "look down upon"(so to speak) the current trends. I'm sure my parents wondered what was so great about what I was listening to in the 60's and 70's. They grew up in the 30's and 40's. You know, the depression, big band era, jazz, and WW2?
While not particularly caring for the rap/hip hop genre, I don't dismiss it entirely. I find things about it to like, enjoy and appreciate. I still moan and sigh when my kids listen to some stuff though.
I greatly enjoy and appreciate Prince's music but never close myself off from other music(past and present), even the pop music(good and bad).
I continue to think that there's nothing wrong with pop music. Most people are not musicians, they don't play instruments, they could care less about everything musicians know or think they know about the art-form. All they know is simplicity. A 4 minute song that has a good beat, hook, something they can whistle or dance to, and touches them lyrically or emotionally-and entertains them in their car, at work, at home, or when out on the town.
There's nothing wrong with marketing music to that niche in society.
So I don't consider myself a snob. I know the word, fan, is derived from the word, fanatic, but if the word is to be taken literally, then I guess I don't fit the description in regards to Prince's music. As I've stated before, Prince did not INVENT pop, rock'n'roll, funk, etc. I grew up and lived through an era when "Prince Music" didn't even exist.
Why close your mind to what others have to bring to the table musically? To do so, is to limit yourself. The world is bigger than Prince.

P.S. Why don't you try listening to a symphony now and then?

The reason why i stress out prince to people and be a snob about their music, is because of how underrated prince is today with the general public.

If he was getting as much attention as Eminem gets, I probably wouldn't say anything about him.

Because credit would be where it is due.

Slave2daGroove

People that are into really into music (Prince or whoever) are music elitists.

e·lite or é·lite

A group or class of persons or a member of such a group or class, enjoying superior intellectual, social, or economic status: “In addition to notions of social equality there was much emphasis on the role of elites and of heroes within them” (Times Literary Supplement).
