We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Up until a year or so ago, I didn’t realize that “Push It Up” became a song while Prince and Doug E were working on a remix of Jam of The Year. JotY was good live. I agree with everyone that it didn’t live up to it’s name, but it’s a smooth tune. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. I like it. Of all the songs I listen to on Emancipation, it makes the list for me. "A strong spirit transcends rules." - Prince

There's something really plastic about it, production-wise. Too neat and perfect sounding. There's just this....sheen to it (and the album as a whole) that really chaps my ass. Is it a good song at it's core? I guess. Definitely not in his top 200 (and certainly not as an album opener). Emancipation's production as a whole is too Smooth Jazz for my tastes. I want my Prince music to sound like it could all fall apart at any second, not that pre-packaged tv dinner bs this album is guilty of having. Its a rough one for me, obviously. Get in your mouse, and get out of here!

Live version is so much better than the album. (Insert something clever here)
