actuall Dirty Mind is a nod to new wave. closest he got to punk are all live versions of Annie Christian,Bambi live first avenue 1982 and When Doves Scream

i always thought the punk movement heavily influenced the album, the look and even some of the dancing, that wasn't nothing like the dancing he was doing 3 years later, that was what we in the hood would laugh at.

New York Punk street punk?
New York arty punk?

Punk as back to basics rock and roll?
Punk as an attitude and philosophy?

Punk that never moves beyond sounding like 1977?
Punk that rejects even the idea of using guitars and song structures?

Hippie Crass-style commune living punk?

Music for and by people under 21 years old only?

Green Day California punk? Before or after they signed to a major?

on that, does signing to a major mean you're a sellout or does it show that you don't have the privilege of being able to turn down cash?

Blink 1982 college kids punk?

another interesting thing, the guy, forget his name, the writer/producer of minneapolis produced "funkytown" said that "dirty mind was the funkiest album to ever come out of Minneapolis". I thought Prince's Time Productions were "funkier".

Any time Prince did "punk" he put his own stamp on it or blended another style into it.

The Vanity 6 album had punk/new wave thing going on

punk's not a genre, it's a movement, a lifestyle, a diy aesthetic. it includes a lot of stuff...

prince was 100% punk, 100% of the time.

Prince's punky, new-wave / funk hybrid stuff was cool, but let's face it, most people associate punk with more straightforward guitar stuff.

I thought the performance of "Partyup" on SNL was pretty punk in its own way.

A mix of Post-Punk and New Wave through a funk lens.

you're right but at the dirty mind through, maybe the purple rain parts of his career, he had the punk sensibility of anti-establishment and non conformity and he did wear the rude boy pin on the cover of dirty mind. He wasn't a pure anything but he was certainly paying attention to punk.

Compassion is pretty close.
