If you watch that video ('Empty Room', Montreux 2009) in higher resolution, you can see that he is licking his thumb because it's cut and bleeding - bleeding quite a lot, actually. It would seem he did it on a large ring he was wearing on that hand prior to this segment.

I've watched that vid over and over because that's definitely one of them he does it in and even though I've heard the bleeding thing, there's nothing to be seen to my eyes. Have you got anything to show that better?

The really high res. versions have been taken down but the best I can find at the moment - and you have to look HARD - is on a site called 'Upload Stars', 3.05 - 3.10 or thereabouts. Look at the middle / lower section of his thumb - and have your specs on!
