Prince gave us that name (New Power Generation) long ago. The Purple Army is a rip off from the Kiss Army. Thoughts?

I grew up in Detroit, so first and foremost, I've always been one of his little Motorbabies. He called into Detroit's ONE and ONLY Electrifying Mojo's radio show on the night of his '86 Cobo Hall Birthday concert and gave us that name live on the air.

Motorbabies is a nickname long before Prince arrived on the scene. That being said, if they release Musicology on DVD it should be the Detroit show. It was on fire.

The Kiss Army is a rip off from the actual Army, so I think you're in the clear.

However, the first musical band to use it as a reference for their fans was KISS.

I never understood what the New Power Generation meant... after the Lovesexy band disbanded the meaning or intent was never fully carried out

Wasn't it Prince that used Purple Army to begin with?

I know he was using Purple soldiers in the 80s..

Never liked it, I don't think Prince ever referenced his fans as that either. Army? The mere word is synonymous with violence, which Prince was clearly against.

Honestly I laugh when I see Purple Army, it's just ridiculous, what are we fighting? He held/holds the highest musical rank in music history....I think the army can stand down, there is no threat!

Dr.Funkenberry said on the June 16 podcast about the Celebration in Minneapolis that he and Kiran Sharma came up with the term the Prince Army and it was later changed to the Purple Army and was mentioned during Prince's last appearance on Arsenio.

I agree. Purple Army sounds silly and derivative of "Kiss Army".

However, Prince DID refer to his fans as an "army" in his song Letitgo. ("But now I got an army and they´re three million strong.")

I prefer New Power Generation and New Breed. Or Fams . Or anything other than Purple Army.

In the podcast he said the guy who used the phrase was a friend of his and then said "he wanted the fan groups to be called that"not sure who he was talking about.Hannah Welton and Adrian Crutchfield use the phrase and Shelby J as well.

Prince said he doesn't like the word fan. He said it's short for fanatic. That has no bearing on me.
I am a "fan". I'm a hardcore fan.

Unfortunately, I am not family, so, I'm not a "Fam". Although I was a member of the NPGMC, I'm not a musician and was never a part of the New Power Generation. And I have zero interest in being part of any "army", even a metaphorical one.
