I am a "fan". I'm a hardcore fan.

Unfortunately, I am not family, so, I'm not a "Fam". Although I was a member of the NPGMC, I'm not a musician and was never a part of the New Power Generation. And I have zero interest in being part of any "army", even a metaphorical one.

Best answer yet, yep, I'm a fan lol

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

Id put myself in that Catagory too...

as much Joy as going to Church...

At times I catch myself, my Fanatacism sometimes borders on

even more that that

Never liked it, I don't think Prince ever referenced his fans as that either. Army? The mere word is synonymous with violence, which Prince was clearly against.

Honestly I laugh when I see Purple Army, it's just ridiculous, what are we fighting? He held/holds the highest musical rank in music history....I think the army can stand down, there is no threat!

[Edited 1/14/18 10:57am]

I agree. Purple Army sounds silly and derivative of "Kiss Army".

However, Prince DID refer to his fans as an "army" in his song Letitgo. ("But now I got an army and they´re three million strong.")

I prefer New Power Generation and New Breed. Or Fams . Or anything other than Purple Army.

I don't like New Power Generation for the fans because the NPG was his band.

Prince more than once referred to us the fans as the NPG. I mean I was an NPGMC member for life too! That's a New Power Generation Music Club Member. Which technical means I am a NPG member. It just means I'm not an NPG band member.

Never liked NPG. Some New Power Generation ? What new Power ?

New Generation ? Most Prince fans are still (way) over 40 yo.

-

New breed ?

Too religeous for me.

-

Everything considering the use of words like 'army' or 'soldiers' is way to American for me. I'm European, I don't believe in war terms and frases for anything else then the army itself.

Certainly not in music.

(The Jackons were creative with that; Michael, Janet.)

-

We're all just 'fans'.

The word 'fans' itself is bizarre enough to be part of. Like we're all slightly addicted to all things Prince.

Creepy actually.

I wish I wasn't a fan. But unfortunately i'm not different from anyone else.

I happen to love his music.

But i never liked purple, the symbol, the bad videos, the overall artwork, the silly things, etc...

But all this actually made Prince as a musician/person that i like very much.

It's complicated. wink

-

Being a fan of a dead person is already even more difficult.

So as of april 21st, 2016, I'm fan of a dead man, hoping only for more wonderful music from the past.

What kind of a fan does this make me then ?

A new power geration purple army breed member ?

wink

It was the introduction of new equipment, instruments, drum machines and recording studios where he seemed to do away with the old and bought in the new. SOTT was the last album to utilise the old stuff (or TBA if we are being precise). Lovesexy was the dawn of this new sound ("welcome to the new power generation") and Batman cemented it with a much more digital sound. This "new power soul" became the bedrock for much of his output for the 90's. After that, the term just stuck and evolved.

Thats my take on it anyway.

Someone once said in an interview that Prince wanted to start a movement (can't remember who said that in the interview, but it was a previous band member that remained close to Prince for years). New Power Generation was that movement that he wanted to get started and that is why he called his "fams" that on many occassions. I think NPG was more the band, even though it stood for New Power Generation, he often referenced them as The NPG, and fans as New Power Generation.

And the movement was like the song says:

Lay down your funky weapon, come join us on the floor
Making love and music's the only things worth fighting 4.
We r the new power generation, we want 2 change the world.
We r the new power generation, we want 2 change the world.
The only thing that's in our way is u.
Your old fashioned music, your old ideas,
We're sick and tired of u telling us what 2 do.

Pardon us for caring, we didn't know it was against the rules (shout it out)
If we only want to love one another
Then tell me now who's the fool (tell me, tell me)

New power generation, you've got to rearrange. We've got
We r the new power generation, you've gotta give up all the fight
We gotta try 2 love one another, baby. we r the new power generation
We r the new power generation.
We r the new power generation.

Essentially, the New Power Generation was supposed to be a movement of loving one another, a movement of peace and love.

Some good points, if you look at New Power Generation from a metaphysical perspective, which Prince was greatly into, it will make more sense.

A couple of the things you said here really struck a chord with me...about being the fan of a dead person already being more difficult, and it's complicated. Others without his music in their hearts really do not understand us. Well anyway, thanks for sharing and I feel the same way... pout

We are the NPG. Sure there were other groups that formed out of geographical comments he made, but we're not a bunch of groups that make up one, we are the NPG. I HATE Purple Army....

Thats my take on it anyway.

Thank you much for this. I did unerstand this as well.

I'm 51 years ld, and over time, as you get older, you see things more from afar, and get a more nuanced opinion about things.

I understand what Prince was trying to create, achieve with the use of this new technology.

It surely helped him out to change and create new 'sounds' and 'arrangements'.

But if the overall effect created a New Power Soul, i don't agree.

Yes it evolved, but basically also stayed the same. Let me explain:

-

I'm getting way too far on the subject, bu I have the time today, so what the hell. wink)) Forgive me.

-

As a songwriter, Prince basically always remained very true to himself.

His aproach was very much the same (with some exceptions of course).

But for a man who wrote thousands, literally THOUSANDS of songs basically all by himself, it is doubtfull in my humble opinion to create a new generation of new power and new soul. As much as he wanted too.

Yes, he was always on the lookout for the new, but that after a while that became common too.

A wonderful energetic Prince always delivered us the stuff. And we were all so excited to hear new stuff.

But over the years we became also more critical, and demanding. Not fully realising that everything basically stays more or less the same.

-

Then, getting rid of the old, and starting something new... It became something of a repetition.

(Besides this, I personally don't believe that people change. They basically don't. They get more aware, and are willin to pay attention if possible, but one actually doesn't change.)

Prince lived in biorhythms. With quite a messurable frequent move he changed fellow members, assembled new groups. Also, he repeated to work with some. But he kept performing live.

He did all that to feel challenged, and possibly to prevent people from getting to close to him (that's my personal humble opinion of course wink).

I don't agree that Prince evolved much, musically and personally. And I think that when he felt that, he went back old school. Which is very good ! Stick to what you do best.

I see this as Prince kept doing what he did best: writing songs, playing games (with the industry and fans), performing live, disliking making videos (not evolving with the image-culture that came with the internet), keeping control over all things and people, and most of all, competing with himself.

As much as he wanted to create a New Power Generation, over the years he experienced that performing live made him unique (and brought in the needed cash). Smart move.

Much more then writing new songs, or releasing them. Hence why he barely played new stuff live.

He somehow stayed true to himself. No New Power, and few New Generation.

And here and there he wrote a brilliant new song again.

(Prince's ballads are so typically him, he would never be able to write a Radiohead or Bon Iver rough-edged-dark-cold-soul-shivering ballad about faillure or unsureness for instance. And that's OK.)

He still was a great song smith. He always was.

If talking about evolving in another fashion, yes he did, when he was younger - up till his mid thirties I think. He was able to play a very-very-very wide range of styles and understanding it.

-

For me, his New Power Generation became a Older Follower Generation, and stayed that. Some in truth, others in doubt, but stayed. And that's all OK too.

-

There will never be someone like him I suppose. And i truely mean that.

Just imagine...

Actually, we will never really know, but he was one of a kind bad smooth motherfucker. Who enjoyed and struggled with life just as we all do. But he knew somehow a way to cover it up a bit more. The secrecism, the games, the cross-over, and the most important, sex mutiplied with his believes.

even as a Jehova, Prince couldn't help but being that sex fiend.

-

Yes I went far off the subject, again, sorry for that. smile

lol I cannot identify with something I don't understand.
Like nicknames 'pookie, moomoo etc' lol I never got into them. I was "Shotgun' when i was a kid, named by my wayward uncle. It is a cool nickname (unlike my cousin he nicknamed Roosterman)
But I still did't understand why he called me Shotgun

.

I still don't know what the New Power Generation is

I did a thread a few years ago, trying to track the evolution of 'Power / New Power / New Power Soul / New Power Generation' from 1988 onward. It seemed like it had an interesting start in 1988, but by the time 1990 came around into 1991 it had lost any further 'canon' building
