Yeah, you know the thing about the Rolling Stones, I don't talk to journalist too much because they... I was always reluctant to give interviews throught my career. And one thing about the Rolling Stones concert and just an example It wasn't as bad as what a lot of the press made it.
If you go to any Rolling Stones concert IDK if you've ever been to one, but u have a hostile audience, you had 94.000 people packed into a stadium, festival seating so everyone was standing it was hot fire hoses spraying the people down like cattle, and with that kind of an atmosphere you're going to get an very irritable crowd. And they wanted to see the Rolling Stones.
So here we come out and where somebody knew and we're a new group, they didn't know who were were. There were a handful of fans that knew who were were and they worked their way up to the front. But for the most part that was a Rolling Stones crowd so when we got up there it wasn't that they were booing us or didn't not like Prince, it was a typical reaction from a Rolling Stones crowd. One persons starts throwing food from one side of the stage next thing you know we are in the middle of a food fight, it was pretty amazing because it looked like clouds of debris flying from one end of the stadium to the other. lol and we just got caught in the crossfire. It was just a typical reaction of Rolling Stones audiences, I've seen it many times before. And what happened is the announcer went out and he kind of barked at the people "You guys are being disrespectful blah blah blah" Next thing you know they were booing, they weren't booing at us, they were booing what he was saying. The papers took that a whole different way. But the Rolling Stones, man what an awesome gig. When I went out there and I saw all those people I was like WOW so this is the big time. -BrownMark

When was this interview with Brownmark? Because it was a pretty big deal, and Prince even flew back home saying he wasn't coming back.

There's an extensive description of the events of that weekend in Alex Hahn's and Laura Tiebert's The Rise of Prince: 1958-1988.

When I was a kid, my family had ON TV (it was a subscription cable service, it's competitor was Select TV). Anyway, ON TV offered a live simulcast of one of those two Rolling Stones shows and they broadcast the opening acts, one being Prince. I didn't really get into Prince until a few months before 1999 came out (I was only 11 when the Stones incident happened) so I wasn't aware that the guy who getting boo'd was Prince, but it was indeed him. Does anyone else recall ON TV broadcasting the event? I remember the J. Geils Band performing too.

Obviously, this was pre-VCR so it was impossible to record, but there has to be video of this out there somewhere.

Why is it so difficult to upload an avatar?

Wow yeah just realized how massive that crowd is. I wouldn't want it to turn on me. I can imagine how it would affect a 20-something year old if it did.

Why does it not fit?

This was only BrownMarks 2nd gig with the band.

The 1st time on stage for the Stones, it was so bad Prince immediatly left the arena went straight to the airport and left. The next show was 2 days later and Fargnoli could not get Prince to return so he asked Mick Jagger to help. Jagger called Prince but Prince still wouldn't budge. Fargnoli then asked Dez to help, Prince listened to Dez and returned to LA. Bobby Z later said it was the only time he'd seen Prince visibly and physically have to do something against his will.

The 2nd show wasn't any better, this time the fans came with rotted food, the band stopped playing and Prince was still singing, he told the crowd thru the microphone during the song Jack U Off, that "You can jack me off". The crowd started throwing more things, and Prince retreated back stage. BrownMark retreated off stage. BobbyZ & Dez were still on stage. In the end only 2 band members remained on stage and they were Bobby Z & Dez. BrownMark then came back on stage as Prince did and they played 2 more songs. The remaining shows with the Stones were scrapped.

After the show Prince consoled BrownMark who was 19. Fearing that BrownMark might quit after such a tramitic time. He assured BrownMark that they had plenty of fans and this just wasn't their audience.

So BrownMark saying in 2015/16 that it wasn't a big deal, has obviously forgot what a big deal it actually was.

And this is why I think BrownMark is a big blowhard. He runs off at the mouth and tries to change Prince's history. Just like the crap he just stirred up with JJ and that tweet, he knew he had her blocked. LMAO. This guy just doesn't tell the truth. He tells 1/2 truths, if that.

VCRs have been mass marketed since 1975: https://en.wikipedia.org/..._recorders

.

So there is a minute chance that someone home-taped this and that it may still exist, perhaps forgotten in a box somewhere. More interesting is whether this broadcast (if it did happen) was also taped professionally. Considering that even something monumental like Live Aid wasn't really captured professionally, again chances are silm.

It was a big effing deal to open for the Stones so it seems someone would have photos.

Like others have said, no footage has ever surfaced that we know about. That "ON TV" broadcast sounds interesting, never heard that it was ever broadcast! Seems likely, since what was fairly common practice by cable stations at the time, screening local concerts by popular acts.. Perhaps it'll pop up out of nowhere someday, much like the audio from one of the shows that a fan recorded from the audience (not just Prince, but of all the opening acts & the Rolling Stones set.. I haven't heard it in forever, but it was interesting to hear people in the crowd talk about Prince's performance.. Comments like "Wow look at all the garbage on the stage!" and "Maybe this isn't the right setting for them, maybe they'll go down better in a small club" or something like that).. Those recordings were posted out of the blue (decades later) so you never really know what's out there until it's confirmed, or leaked somewhere!

The part 'Fearing that BrownMark might quit after such a tramatic time...' was the commentors words.
But if that is what Prince felt, it was probably just Prince's feelings. Remember is reaction to the crowd @ the Purple Rain premiere?

.
But BrownMark being a Stones fan understood the reaction. So I don't think it was far fetched what he said about the show.

BM's words: It wasn't as bad as what a lot of the press made it.

Again, it was bad enough for Prince to fly home the 1st time. It was bad enough that they left the stage (BM included) the 2nd time. The only 2 who didn't leave the stage was Bobby Z and Dez. It was also so bad that they didn't finish out the remaining shows.

Prince quit, and 1 thing Prince isn't, is a quitter. That's how bad it was.

So BM can say what ever he wants, but the facts speak for themselves.

Yes, I believe BM is talking from his perspective, not Prince's. He's still talking from his experience to how the press made it. He was there.
.
I mean the mythos was so out there, that we were lead to believe that crowd noice in Pop Life was from that show. I have the show in mp3 form.
.
Prince was almost paralized at the PR premiere crowd.

It most certainly could have been Prince's fear. IN all fairness, he is the one who would take the hit more because his name is above the marquee so to speak and the heat would be on him. Am I being too easy on Prince (as usual...LOL) to stay that I kind of felt sorry for him...whether or not it was an over=reaction, it obviously hit him hard.

I've always wondered what is so facinating about this sequence. I mean sure it makes for a good story to tell but it's become kind of an overrated myth IMHO.

If you are facinated by it, I would be interested in knowing why nod

Yes, others could have taken it as more humorous

Dez laughed at the idea of singing Jack U Off to that crowd, so some of them might have anticipated a reaction

But BrownMark putting things in perspective from the conditions of that day, would make real sense.

I've been to concerts where people acted like that during and after, so I get what BrownMark is talking about.

I don't think I'm facinated by it. I'm facinated by those earlier Prince years in general.

Which is also why I give props to those in his band during those years and this show over all latter people who came post PR fame.
