Euphoria Highway
Euphoria Highway is an unreleased track recorded on 17 February 1986 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California while working on Jill Jones' first album Jill Jones. In a backstage meeting with George Clinton after Prince and the Revolution's guest appearance with Sheila E. on 6 March 1986 at Universal Amphitheatre, Universal City, CA, USA, Prince gave Clinton a tape of the song (along with Eternity) for use on a planned album by Vanessa Williams that Clinton was set to produce, but the project did not come to pass. Other than Jill Jones singing the title phrase during the song's introduction, it is an instrumental piece. -PrinceVault

G-Spot is the second track on Jill Jones's first and only Paisley Park Records album Jill Jones, and within a few months of the album's release, G-Spot was released as the album's second single. Although Jill Jones shared official writing credits, the song was written solely by Prince. While exact recording dates are not known, basic tracking for Prince's original version likely took place in May 1983, at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota, USA. It was both considered for Vanity 6's sophomore album as for Purple Rain and its title appears in versions of the script as late as October 1983. In the movie the song was to be performed by Prince. It it is also the only song title mentioned in the earliest incarnation of the script (then titled 'Dreams'). It was ultimately cut from the script before shooting commenced in November. Both Vanity and Jill Jones cut lead vocals for it at the Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Vanity's version was presumably done in the spring of 1983 and Jill Jones's lead vocals were done sometime after Vanity was out of the picture, possibly later that same summer. The song was ultimately mixed the song further on 30 January 1986 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California (on the same day as mixing With You, Mia Bocca and Baby, You're A Trip, and recording It's A Wonderful Day). Prince's original version contains Prince calling out "Maceo" for a solo and the line "I don't want no trash, gimme some of that popcorn" (taken from Mother Popcorn) - this is an homage to James Brown and saxophonist Maceo Parker, with whom Prince would work many years later. -PrinceVault

In addition, Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens (a close friend of Jones'), contributed to three tracks on the album. However, only the cover of Prince’s "With You" made the album. His other two contributions "77 Bleeker St." and "Baby Cries (Ay Yah)" were issued as B-sides.

My first album was a very long pregnancy, good God, it took so long get out. It was a really ace album, but, the timing was way off. I don't think everyone was ready for it. Radio wasn't looking for it. There's a rap convention in Atlanta that I went to and people came up to me saying “you're Black? I didn't know you were Black! I would've played your record.” I just came back to Prince, like, “should I just get a tan?” White people somehow knew I was Black and they said “I'm not playing that house Negro on the radio.”
The album was dead in the water. Then, I went to a function and I think I was crying. A Warner Brothers executive (Rob Dickens, CEO of Warner Brothers UK) saw me and he put money into the project to do promotion in Europe. We made the (music) video (for the single "Mia Bocca")...They (Europeans) always liked Josephine Baker, that whole thing always worked. I was discriminated against in my own country. I opened for Jody Watley in LA and, seriously, the crowd just stood there whole time with their arms crossed. I was angry dancing. I was singing “G-Spot” and I was like “I'm not going to shake my ass.” I know (on past tours) I would go out in my bra and panties, but, then I put on my trench coat and I'd leave. I just threw the mike down and walked off the stage. Prince came to me and said “is that it, are you done?” Maybe he created the diva in me.
I think the album was a very intellectual album. We made a decision to take a lot of the poppy songs off. Once Clare Fisher puts the strings on it... I wanted to leave them on... That's where I sealed my fate to never have a hit record...(Prince) could have given me "The Glamorous Life". Sheila E. would come to the studio to play basketball and I did not know that the child was going in (to the studio) late at night and singing the songs...

OF4S I love your threads. . Can you explain what the issue is with choice of songs on the album? I've read on other threads that it should have come out earlier / it sounded dated when it came out in 87 etc etc. ... But I've never found that myself - even when I first got it in 87, as a teenager. Maybe I'm a bit musically unsophisticated, but like someone else said, it just sounded like an eclectic collection of songs to me - like SOTT itself. . That's interesting about Rob Dickens investing in her European career - maybe that's why she turned up on the Jonathan Ross show (The Last Resort) - i've got a tape of that somewhere. I don't think any other proteges ever appeared live on UK TV in the 80s.
