Glad to hear Bad finally got a Diamond certificate.

.

However I agree with statements about the Batman album, compared to his other 80s albums, Batman is crap and a bg departure from the excellence that extended throught to Lovesexy. It dod go #1 but spent a short time there and Batdance being #1 was mainly because of the film, which was excellent and very popular. The Prince product got swept up in the hype, but people put it down once the hoopla passed and they realised how slight the album was. Songs like Lemon Crush, Vicki Waiting and Arms of Orion would never have made it on tohis early albums.

.

It was the first Prince album on autopilot, and easily one of his very worst. It has 3 good songs (Scandalous, Electric Chair, Future) and 2 okay ones (Batdance and Partyman), the rest is forgettable tosh.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

You're entitled to your opinion, personally, Vicki Waiting is a great song to me, on the whole I disagree with this Batman bashing. Lemon Crush is not great but neither is Ronnie Talk to Russia or Temptation or Jughead or Walk don't Walk. Around the World in a Day and Paisley Park are OK songs, I don't skip them but they're not songs I seek out to listen to. The guy had a lot o great songs and some DUDs and some OK songs. It's all subjective, there's someone out there that loses their shit when Paisley Park comes on LOL.

I wish the numbers were a bit more specific than one unit of difference being 500,000

Jumping from 0 to that to 1 million is not very informative. neutral

There is really no "specific" number unless it is audited... For example, the most recent total sales numbers for Purple Rain when it hit #4 on the world wide sales chart during the PR DELUXE reissue was at 21 million.

The albums that have been certified GOLD indicating 500,000 sales or more, once again there is no specific sales numbers unless you actually request it from RIAA, and at this point I haven't found it anywhere online.

For example, LOVESEXY has been certified GOLD with an estimated total sales of over 700,000 in the U.S. alone, however we don't have the exact sales numbers of LOVESEXY available to us. It could be more than 700,000, could be 800,000, could be 900,000... However we don't have EXACT sales numbers for every album.

Also at this point, there are albums that have had steady sales figures as well as the surge of sales after his passing that haven't been updated by the RIAA for 20+ years...

Purple Rain still stands at 13 Million in the U.S. The last time it was audited by RIAA was 1996, so the sales for Purple Rain should be much more now.

Big selling albums like 1999 was last certified 4 Million in 1999, I'm sure 19 years later that number has gone up. I'd really like to know the EXACT number of units sold for each album but we really have no access to that at this point...

This is the most recent and accurate total sales for PURPLE RAIN after PR DELUXE was released.

This date is from the Global Album Chart for the week of July 8. PURPLE RAIN was only in the Top 10 for one week in the World Wide album chart after the PR DELUXE reissue.

According to Media Traffic it just hit 21 Million sales after the PR DELUXE release. So at this point Jan 10, 2018 add a few thousand more sales to that number since July I would say no more than 30,000 total.

week 9
Prince - Purple Rain
Warner Bros. - 94.000 / ~21.000.000

Yea... Shows you MJ's label and estate still wants to get the proper certifications for sales... Prince's estate should do the same... Especially with Purple Rain.

Sony only recertifies the trinity "OFTW / Thriller / Bad". His greatest hits such as Number Ones or The Essential are still undercertified, despite obvious soundscan sales.

This number of 21.000.000 was in fact there on this website even before Prince's death, and was never updated, like many other catalogue albums.

It sold one million since his death, so the album sold more than 22 millions for sure.

.

Prince uncertified albums, beside the obvious Purple Rain and Diamonds and Pearls, are mainly his greatest hits :

HITS 1

HITS 2

TVBO

Ultimate

The quality of an album doesn't matter with sales.

Despite being a catchy song, Partyman failed in the charts. By his release on September 15, 1989, Batman grossed only 12 millions $ more in the US box office until the end of its exploitation in december 1989.

So the hype around the movie was already gone, and the music video maybe rest on too much on the Batman universe - paradoxally.

.

The Arms of Orion was an horrible single choice, they should have used Scandalous or Vicky Waiting instead.

Prince captured the Batman character far better than the perpetually (remake the same movie) Tim Burton
