I think the best way to discribe Prince's approach is to call it SHOCK TREATMENT. In his mind, I think he was convinced it might have worked. After all, who'd expect this from him, right?

What's "shocking" about years & years of moving closer to God?

Read the quote closer: nothing was stated saying drawing closer to God was shocking as if to suggest that such a move is wrong.

But, this is'nt as innocent as it may seem. When you use it as a TOOL to draw attention to yourself, that's a problem!

You mean to tell me that Prince, the guy who has had a sex fiend rep since his early years, the man who brought controversy upon himself and his work, only in part because of that, thinks that an album imbued of a subversive (to the mainstream who doesn't follow his every move) religious doctrine will bring back fans who jumped off the bandwagon back in the 80s? The same album that isn't pushed by Arista, or EMI? The same album that isn't pushed by payola on the radio? That same album that could realistically be considered the most risky of his career? The same album that takes rhino balls to release, for many reasons stated and unstated in this post?

hmmm Yes, that's logical.

I think the best way to discribe Prince's approach is to call it SHOCK TREATMENT. In his mind, I think he was convinced it might have worked. After all, who'd expect this from him, right? At this point in his career, and from long observation, I feel it's safe to say that Prince is not above this...

True, because all those greats who did go from secular to religious at different points in their careers, i.e. Aretha, Rev. Al, Little Richard...those religious albums they released became HUGE hits and all reminded us of their heyday! After all, who would expect that from Little Richard? doh!

Actually, Prince secretly belongs to a cult that worships the ancient race of the gill-people, of which I am the last survivor. Once a year, Prince makes a pilgrimage to the Amazon, where he spends a week cleaning my lair. He also has to bring me mexican food, or he'll go straight to hell. Its all part of the doctrine. You humans are so gullible.

I've heard all the theories: he's using he's freedom of speech, he's sharing, he's preaching the good news, etc., etc. But when the smoke clears the only impression he has left me with is that it was done to draw attention to himself.

Well that's logical.

It's also SAD. TRC screams: look at me! Listen to me! Pay attention to me! Not for the fans (or fams) who have choosen to stay, but for those he wishes to get back.

TRC is not the kind of record that would win back loads of fans. If anything it would turn more people off.

It goes without saying that if Prince draws attention to God, he is drawing attention to himself. I'm not saying I believe Prince is God, or that Prince believes he is God. He has a message, and he is spreading his love for it through his music.

Prince is probably Athenian in spirit, with a shrine/temple even to the UNKNOWN GOD.
Spending his time ever learning, in an endless search, for some new spiritual, metaphysical thing.

an album is self expression.. music is self expression.. so when he write he is expressing his self.. at this point in his career he is moving closer to spirituality.. thoughout his life he was searching for a higher power.. he probably tried to fuse that with sexuality.. read any early interview he has given.. he was in his embryonic stages of his journey.. he is now in his forty's.. how many of you still think the same way you did 25 years ago?? anyone who is in pursuit of truth will stumble on that road many times.. prince didn't "tell" anyone to buy his belief! eminem can speak about homosexual's and wife abuse.. he is adored.. but what happens when he realizes that he no longer wants to believe that? he will loose fans.. of course!! believe me the record company's are telling him not to change up due to the money they are making!! prince...he wants people to listen to his music.. in my opinion that is why he has released xpectation.. he is a musician first.. in this time what is he to do? he no longer wants to sing about something he no longer believes in which is pre-marital sex.. he realizes a lot of his fan base was created by his earlier "self-expression" at the time. my opinion is if you dig prince music and not his religion.. buy his instrumental music. if you truly value his opinion or self expression in a lyrical sense.. delve deeper into what he is saying.. but i suggest pick up your bible and read for yourselves and make your own concious mature decision as he has. what a burden it is to switch your belief system when millions dug you when you were wearing bikini underwear and tons of makeup talking about free sex.. and now to change HAS GOT to be troublesome..

At the moment he worships Jehovah the father of our saviour Jesus Christ the Lord. But that won't last much longer, once he has got as much material has he can from JW he will become a muslim and then a bhuddist!!!

Ok so Prince was not a JW when he wrote the song, but he was religious and even now is still a vegan. So my point is if hes a real JW then y does he stay as a vegan? Thus he conducts his life not as a JW, better.

Larry Graham, is nothin compared 2 Prince, Prince was sellin millions even before Larry Graham was heard of, by fams.

Sam 8)

Why should what he eats have anything to do with religion. I am not a religious person, I believe in certain aspects of bhuddism and believe that you should be good to fellow men no matter what. But I don't eat meat, not because of bhuddism or god or anything like that, I don't eat meat because I think it's wrong. It is not right in my mind to kill other creatures (wether you see them as gods creatures or just creatures that have happened to evolute into what they are) for food. I am not arrogant enough to decide that I am better than a cow or a sheep and that I have the right to slaughter it to satisfy my hunger. Not everyone shares that view and I appreciate that and would never think of forcing my beliefs on others (my wife eats meat). So when Prince decides to change his religion again (and he will, you'll all start dissing me and say i'm talking shit, but trust me, he will) he may still decide to stop eating meat because he too thinks that it is wrong.

i always dug Prince because of the music/sounds he makes. i actually listened to some songs for years before realizing what was being implicated sexually. i simply dug the MUSIC...THE SOUNDS...and the ATTITUDE...including the theory that GOD LOVES US ALL.
i believe that Prince worships the God that speaks directly to him regardless of which external religion he may associate with. Presently he is associating with the JW's and i would assume from this that he is worshiping Jehovah giving praise and glory in a belief that this is the one, true God.
Aside from a specific 'religion' i think that Prince has a highly evolved sensitivity to life and spiritual matters. He honors the unseen aspect of life thru his reverence to all creations. He doesn't find it necessary to slaughter a warm or cold blooded creature to satisfy his sensory cravings for food. Instead he is satisfied with food that can be consumed without bloodshed. rose
