Prince made a fool of himself that night and I have seen films of Michael do the splits way back in 1969 and in the early early 70s. I think Mike just moved on from it. It's too bad he can't move on from the 80s. I'm way more into Prince, but I got the feeling that James wished he had never let Prince on stage. He didn't do anything except make a fool of himself.

The one thing I can't find on Kazaa.com is his real first TV appearance On the midnight Special with Wolfman Jack. I have the 1980 American Bandstand appearence, the 1981 Saturday night live appearence and that foolishness with James brown. I even got the 1982 solid Gold performance of 1999 and the 1983 solid gold performance of little red corvettte, but no midnight special.

This is the freakiest performance ever! MJ kept it brief but Prince just went wild. It is sooo funny to see his "erotic dancing" at this stage in his career - so vastly different to his current state of mind.

I certainly wouldn't say it's a terrible performance - just the strangest you are likely to see!

I kind of like it - it's like car crash TV!

You can see Prince just freaks out when he's not in control. There was no sound check for him, it wasn't his guitar, etc. Yes he seems out of it, but if he just let himself go he could have kicked MJ's ass. Instead he seems to self involved and concerned about getting a good guitar sound or looking sexy. Prince can do the JB moves better than Michael when he's on his own stage. This is probably why he didn't do We Are the World. Prince can't do anything when he's not in total control of everything-sound, lights, band, stage, etc.

I've seen this, and both performers didn't do a great job. MJ started to sing a few lines quite well, then the band suddenly jump into a funk groove, forcing MJ to start dancing instead - with his back to the audience. MJ didn't seem to really want to get up on stage, but at least he was near the front. Maybe he forced JB to get Prince up on stage to get his own back! But Prince was obviously right at the back somewhere. When he arrives at the stage on Chick's back, he throws his lace gloves into the crowd, I'm sure someone throws one right back at him! However, I reckon Prince looked far more at home on the stage than MJ, if only he'd ripped into the guitar rather than posing and tearing off his jacket. I reckon he forgot for a moment it wasn't his stage, takes some guts to take off your clothes in front of all those people! I also thought it was rude of James Brown to turn his back on Prince while he was doing his thing.

The most embarrassing thing was when he swung on the prop lamp and it fell into the crowd as he left the stage - but how was he to know they weren't properly fixed in place? Also it's funny James Brown has to run after him with his jacket he left behind!

Ahh well, you got to remember he was only young then and still learning. I don't know what JB was thinking inviting 2 of the most shy reclusive popstars on stage with no rehearsal!

Also someone on this thread said that Prince's speech at the Brits was also embarrassing. Personally I liked his 2 speeches at the Brits "Praise be to God" around 85 and "On stage, truly free, on record, slave" around 95, can you remember ANY speech from anyone else around those times? They had impact BECAUSE they wuz wierd...

Oh man!!! OK - guess we're gonna differ in opinion onTHAT one! lol Was certainly funky - but not in the musical sense evillol

I agree about the BPI Awards (Now named: The Brit Awards') speech back in 1985 - I took some MAJOR ribbing at school the next day over that.

What REALLY annoyed me back then tho was the fact that all the papers here (and 2 be fair - seemingly most of the people at the awards ceremony) made fun of him. Unlike many stars of that time, he made the effort midway thru a massively succesful tour 2 fly over 2 pick up 2 awards.

The papers here tore in2 him with a passion (although saying that, he did gain HUGE exposure over here 4 the next 4 or 5 years - most days u couldnt open a paper without there being a 'Prince story') mocking his thanku speech '2 God'.

Kinda ironic that nowadays, the majority of acceptance speeches include this as standard, and nobody blinks an eyelid! rolleyes

Because of all the negative press he attained, he decided not 2 tour Europe. I was SO p*ssed at the British press I can't even begin 2 tell ya mad I would've loved 2 have seen and experienced that tour 1st hand. But it just wasnt 2 be...

PS: still think Prince looks like he's wearing one of his duvet covers in ElePANTS & Flowers lol

i remember his second speech in '85 was "it's nice 2 know so many people so far away, love u"

I didn't see anything wrong with his speeches. It was just the British tabloids being wankers as usual.

I remember that line 2 - I thought that was really nice + he did look genuinely humbled at the fuss and attention - but on the footage, u can actually see people laughing AT him - some of the cameras even panned in on them.

Grrr!!! mad

If u ever do get the chance 2 see this footage, do - I remembered being SO excited!!! lol

Prince midnight special. That should've worked...Prince saturday night live, Prince American bandstand and James Brown prince Michael Jackson all worked. I just don't think anyone has the file. I know VH-1 ran reruns of the midnight special, about the same time they ran reruns of AB, so I don't see why it's not on Kazaa.

Oh I do get it. I understand attitude far more then you do. Besides funk I rock hardcore hip-hop, industrial, and punk metal. If you can look at that stupid performance by Prince and think it's really good then you are the dork, with your head so far up Prince's butthole, that you would think it's great if he (prince) were to come out on stage and sing twinkle twinkle little star, with toy instruments from Wal-Mart, while sitting on a toilet.
