Met my neighbor who is a Prince fan...

Not sure if this is the right forum, or not, but I took my kids to see The Last Jedi last night and as we drove past the house (two doors down from me) my son said, "Mom, our neighbor has a Prince symbol in front of their house." I had to turn around to go back to see it, to which my son said, "Ugh, I shouldn't have said anything." Sure enough, she had a Prince symbol. Today I went by and took a picture.

25498255_10211533105782846_8454622729697615102_n.jpg?oh=42526cb4b51b4e2e15d7fa418354207c&oe=5AC90ACB

I decided to knock on their door and find out where they got it. One of them is an artist, and the other loves Prince. The artist made it for her wife. The wife took me around the house to show me other artwork that her wife had created, and they were beautiful! Hopefully, I've made some new friends! (And the added bonus, is they have a daughter my daughter's age!) The neighbors between us, wonderful couple, are going to get tired of hearing Prince in stereo this summer! lol

He definitely remains a strong part of my life, through his music, friends I've made over the years, and friends I am now meeting.

She said her father was a police officer (I think it was her father) and he gave him a speeding ticket. She said Prince would only roll down his window far enough to hand out his license and get the ticket. One time her father called in a back up officer, a black woman, and Prince got upset when he gave him the ticket, because they were the only two black officers in the area and they gave him a ticket. lol

Prince once talked about "driving while black in Minnesota" during an interview. I wonder if this anecdote was the inspiration behind it.

I read it two days ago. Could be the Ebony interview but I´m not sure.

That's interesting. I'll have to find out when her dad gave him the ticket. Apparently, though, he was known to speed quite a bit, she said. And I wonder if it could be attributed to him being black vs him being Prince and them knowing it's Prince? I would have probably pulled him over all the time just to ask about his latest album, get his autograph, on a warning ticket, or just to drool. lol

But if you remember what he said in the interview, could you share it???

Very cool! Seems more and more Prince fans are showing their love for him in various ways since he passed and are proud to let others know how they feel.

Sure.

It was in the Washington Post. Here´s the quote:" He applauded his own musical influences, showing respect for Carlos Santana and his reverence for the band-leading prowess of Ike Turner. He warned about the Minneapolis police department and the easy risk of being ticketed for driving while black."

By the way, his Cousin (Chazz?) and Kim Basinger both mentioned Prince´s reckless driving style in interviews. Kim Basinger said he often ignored red traffic lights, and his cousin said something similar.

Prince was a uniter and would love that his energy is getting people to know the neighbors. We all should know people around us and really connect and not superficially but friendly.

Thanks, everyone!

Someone mentioned that Prince was a "uniter" and I definitely agree. I've always felt that Prince brought people together. My two best friends I met on the Love4OneAnother website back in 1998 and we're still friends today, people I would never have met had it not been for Prince.

I thanked him for that one time on Twitter, for bringing my life long friends into my life, and he posted later that same day, "U r more than welcome".

Regarding my neighbors, they've apparently moved in recently. She had a lot of artwork that she had done of Prince, Bob Marley, and some other artists. But it was really neat to walk through her house and see how prominent Prince was displayed.

She had a painting of Prince (that her wife did) in her bedroom. She had a pencil sketch of Prince hanging in the hallway. She had a copy of Insight News with Prince's picture hanging on her refrigerator (she had two copies and gave me one). Of course the symbol outside, as well. She said they had some others that they had not had a chance to put up yet and she would show them to me when she got them hung up.

He's no longer with us, but he still brings people together.

Amazing, amazing man.

Thanks for the link KoolEaze!

If Prince drove as recklessly as what others are reporting, it's no wonder he was pulled over! (I still think it's just because they recognized his car and wanted to pull him over because he was Prince. My neighbor said her dad (the cop) is the one that got her into him. So if he was a fan...).

Interesting......I was thinking about the very same thing last night. He really united and brought together so many people from so many different parts of the world and some even became very close friends or got married.

I´m sure that other musicians and bands probably also have fans that met new friends at concerts and online but it seems to me that Prince was really good at uniting people without even doing it on purpose.

In the end, his old idea about a "New Breed" from the Controversy days finally came true, albeit under a new moniker (New Power Generation....not just a band name but also what he called his followers at times).

I wonder if he was aware of all this , and if so, to what extent.

I don't know if he was aware at how effective he was at doing it, but I think on some level he did know that he brought people together. I read in an interview after his passing, one of his previous bandmates or someone that was close to him, said that Prince had wanted to start a movement and believed New Power Generation wasn't just a band, but was that movement. He wanted his fans to be that New Power Generation, thus why he would call us that. But I believe, if I recall correctly, they said that he was often disappointed because he hadn't started a movement. It sounds like he was wanting his fans to become advocates for love 4 one another, being open and accepting of our racial differences, and bringing not just fans together, but the world together.

It's interesting that many of his songs would touch on this, on coming together, on loving each other, starting way back with New Breed around the time of Controversy with the song Sexuality and the New Breed fan club. If I recall correctly, he brought up New Breed again in The Rainbow Children album. I think that is what he felt one of his purposes was, but from the article, it sounded like he felt like that was one purpose he never accomplished completely.

LOL - My son trying to take back seeing it, is because mom had to turn around to go back and see it for herself, instead of getting him to the theater immediately! He was so excited about the latest Star Wars movie and seeing it on opening weekend, that he forgot to take into consideration that mom would have to see the symbol in front of the neighbor's herself. lol He's a good kid (16 year old). I'm really proud of him.

You just reminded me of a time about 4 years ago. I was in Chanhassen, one town away from me, and while driving I saw his purple prowler. I was with my mom and son so I "casually" circled around near the gas station he was sitting at. His windows were tinted but I could make out his long hat over his straightened afro thru the front window. As he pulled out we were just driving by and we waived to him like groupies smile oops!...he sped off super fast down highway 5 and that was that...So I can add stalker to my resume now wink

i believe it and have read those stories for years. also, that personality type, and lets be honest, there are a ton of aggressive, angry, crazy drivers out there, are all over and Prince seems like he'd be one. Alot of issues come out of people when they drive, maybe they got chewed out by the boss but they can't talk back so they give you the finger on the highway. My old mentor was as non-confrontational as could be but he told me he once drove 40 miles trying to catch a guy who cut him off. I know a white guy, drives crazy as fuck, never gets a ticket, i drive his truck sometimes and I just recently noticed he didn't have his tabs renewed, i would never fucking drive with bad tabs knowingly, this maniac has been driving with no tabs, speeding, driving all over the fucking place and never gets a ticket. white people can do that, we can't, not complaining, just being realistic.
