Vinyl has been used ever since I've been collecting as a kid and that was quite some time ago. It's almost universally used in stores as well as online. It's definitely not a new thing.

I got myself some used CDs as a belated birthday present, so here's to Prince for your birthday!

My point was that this new fad of calling them 'vinyls' that the generation that is just coming of age seems to use to describe 'records' is a weird one.

I've been buying RECORDS for just about 40 years now, and it's ALWAYS been "records" and NEVER "vinyls" (and certainly never "vinyl's" - no need for a possessive appostrophe when speaking of plurals). I've only first heard "vinyls" used in this context for the first time about five years ago.

Your Pops did the dang thang with dat gift!!! Although I was raised on vinyl, I'm not a big vinyl collector. All my original vinyl are stored for safe keeping. But, I gotta give props to a Pops who knows what kind of gift to give!

Uh, no. I bought them at various points in the 80s and early 90s. I DID get Around The World In A Day on my brother's birthday (May 6) in '85. I remember that one well, as we went to Crazy Eddie in New Jersey so he could get a computer (an Amiga, if I'm not mistaken), and my 14-year-old self got all excited about seeing the new Prince album. I begged my mom to get it for me since Steve was getting the computer and all... Long story short, I got it and spent the hour-plus car ride home poring over the lyrics, wondering just what it would sound like (at this point, not ever Raspberry Beret had been released as a single or video, so the whole thing was brand new to me). Of course, that album became the soundtrack of the summer for me (along with The Power Of Love by Huey Lewis & The News, but I digress...)

If I wanted to be cute, I'd say that it might not be an appropriate present as I don't know the OP's age, but the honest truth is that I don't know WHAT the hell happened to my Dirty Mind album. I will have to find a replacemnt.
