prince sampling other artists this is nothing new, i know, but i just (re-)discovered that prince borrowed pretty heavily from jimi hendrix' little miss lover. i had it on the other day, and when it started i thought, hey that's tick, tick bang! prince has used some rather creative samples over the years, including tower of power's "squib cakes" on "release it." he used squib cakes again on "sleep around."
starting in 1992, samples had to be acknowledged in the songwriting credits (see notes to symbol album, emancipation) but before that, you had to be pretty sharp to pick up on them. can anyone think of other pre-1992 samples of other artists prince has used? good spot on jimi hendrix' little miss lover.
you should read the thread about 'What was P was listen to...' as it's answering your questions. i already posted this on that thread, but - Gett Off samples Shack Up pt1 by Banbarra.

thanks NME. i'm moving over to that thread now.
but first, i forgot to ask: has anyone ever actually heard "god make me funky" by the headhunters or "tramp" by mccrackin and fulsom, both of which prince samples on the symbol album? i'm pretty sure that headhunters album is out of print, and i've heard otis and carla's "tramp", but not the other one. God Made Me Funky is a classic. Can't believe it's out of print. There were even vinyl rereleases a couple of years ago. It has a brilliant intro building up from a phased guitar riff (Blackbyrd McKnight, who soon after became bandleader of Parliament-Funkadelic), heavy bass coming in, tight drumming. It goes on for nine minutes climaxing in a wild sax solo. Never heard of the other one... Sampling really just started around '88-'89. Before that Prince never used samples I think. My impression was that Prince started using samples like he was using rap; a sometimes desperate attempt to get into the hiphop scene.

I have "Tramp" by Mc.Crackin and Fulsom on CD. I think the CD was attached to the cover of a music magazine. Its very funky.

If you listen closely to 'Thunder', you hear the ever-popular 'Funky Drummer' loop.
Everybody knows that Prince looped Sly's 'Family Affair' in 'Y Should Eye Do That'. That's all I can think of right now... -SWANGcheckintheorgagain

"Live4Love" samples the countdown sequence from "Barbarella"
not strictly another 'artist' but still, it's a sample. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

On "Gett Off" he also sampled the horn riff from James Brown's "Mother Popcorn".
