I'm satisfied with everything he has done. What could be better/different ??; maybe this:

1999: it's a double album with "only" 70mins run time. I would include lust u always and purple music. Would have fit perfectly.

parade: I don't like the abrupt ending of life can be so nice followed by the instrumental venus de milo. If it has to be an abrupt ending then love or money would have been a better next song for it.

Atwiad: this should have been a double album with some longer versions. An album deserves longer versions of songs. America is too long but I made an edit for myself that fades out at 13mins (at the beginning of the drum rolls). Pop life 9mins is perfect. And also we can fuck followed by temptation, she's always in my hair extended.

"Graffiti Bridge" to me is the only classic album of the gold run that could be really better than what it is.

a) Put the associated tracks (and collaborative tracks like "The Latest Fashion" and "Graffiti Bridge") in a 2nd CD and let alone a proper P album

b) Take away "Tick Tick Bang" and bring in "The Grand Progression" and "God Is Alive"

c) Let alone "Joy In Repetition" not screwing his beginning in a segue with WCF

d) Use the entire "New Power Generation (Pt.1 + Pt.2)" as the closing track, avoiding the recycling of the end of "Positivity"

e) Use the full lenght version (or maybe an edit of it) of "Thieves In The Temple"

So a better tracklist (to me) could be:

1) Can't Stop This Feeling I Got

2) Thieves In The Temple (Full Lenght Version or Edit of FLV)

3) The Question Of U

4) Elephants & Flowers

5) The Grand Progression

6) We Can Funk

7) Joy In Repetition

8) God Is Alive

9) Still Would Stand On Time

10) New Power Generation (Pt.1 + Pt. 2)

Personally I’d replace God Is Alive with Prince’s version of Melody Cool (or even Love Machine). Either way, that’d be an amazing album!

I tend to agree that he got the track lists spot on during the classic period, but I think ATWIAD would be miles better with She Is Always in My Hair and The Dance Electric replacing Tambourine and Temptation. And since we’re at it, include The Screams of Passion as well.

1999: Reeplacing All the Critics with Purple Music would have made it a completely different album...and an even better one, which is saying a lot, because it’s already a masterpiece.

I agree.Remove the silly "Tambourine" to make room for it,if need be."She's Always In My Hair" is a superb song.

It is, but it doesn't fit on ATWIAD. It belongs on album with The Dance Electric and maybe other songs that remain in the vault.

Now here's a thing..when I got ATWIAD Tambourine was my WTF track...now I cant imagine the album without it..pure whimsical, silly & innuendo Prince...unique!

I have lost count over the years as to how many unreleased tracks we have. In all honesty & as much as I love them [especially the last few sets] I can't say that any album released would have benefitted from the tracks left off.

P.Rain - 9 tracks of utter perfection

Dirty Mind - 8 tracks ofutter perfection!

SOTT - we could configure it a million time sover BUT WB pressure was great..the set is perfect

Parade - we could easily add / chop & change...BUT the released version is stunning

LoveSexy - come on - we aint touching that!

etc

The list goes on. I wouldn't change a thing!

[Edited 12/12/17 9:18am]

You can thank WB for that, not Prince. If it was up to Prince he'd have released double albums. WB made him edit his project down to single album releases.

I think he could have improved:

Controversy (Tick Tick Bang, Lisa, Feel U up, Irresistible Bitch > Ronnie, Anna Stesia)

ATWIAD (Girl, Hello, SAIMH, Wonderful Ass, We can Fuck, and most of the Family album > temptation, the ladder, and tamborine)

Lovesexy: (so many songs from 86-88 > Glam Slam, Dance On, I wish u heaven)

I always swap Love Bizzare for Christopher Tracy's Parade.

I like Irresistable Bitch as a B side to the 1999 album

.

I wrestle with ATWIAD too because it is my top 5 favorites. But I think he was trying to present a 'wholistic' view on that album, and Girl She's Always In My Hair, Wonderful Ass, We Can Fuck (most of the Family album etc) would make it a 'romantic -relationships' concept album

.

I love Tamborine, I could trade the Ladder with something - Old Friends 4 Sale, even thought the Ladder takes on a different romance when he plays in live. Hello was written after ATWIAD was completed.

PARADE IS PERFECTION!

PARADE EST LA PERFECTION!!

But it moved so fast and didn't fully reflect the movie music flow, he could/should have added MIA BOCCA and HEAVEN, maybe even SEXUAL SUICIDE

That's a good question.

I certianly think SAIMH should have been on ATWIAD and been the lead single; no question.

Old Friends 4 Sale should have made Parade somewhere. Hard to argue with SOTT, 1999 or Purple Rain's final cuts or how they turned out, even as much as I love 17 Days and Erotic City. They worked great as b-sides and cemented his legend. I can't think of too many b-sides that got that much radio traction either so it worked. Lovesexy is not my favorite but everything fits. Agree that Days of Wild is amazing and should have made TGE somewhere. PFUNK would have fit in nicely on LotusFlow3r

Prince was just too gifted, prolific and talented. He was like a chef that always makes too much fucking food for the event. Impossible to pare down the menu and such.

Sometime around GB and the proliferation of CD's, I started cobbling together my own mixes of a lot his stuff and just piecing together the songs I liked to make whole new albums. I still do and have a ton of mixes all over the place.

Mostly... yes. Few of the unreleased tracks are as good as the ones that were released- in the 1980s that is. (Except for No Light In a Large Room, which I think is one of his best songs ever.) In the 1990s, for some reason, he gave some of his best songs away to singers that since then have been forgotten. Who remembers Martika or Jevetta Steele? Yet who wouldn't agree that Love Thy Will Be Done and Open Book are superior to anything on Diamonds & Pearls? And I can understand that he thought songs like Wally and Old Friends 4 Sale were a little too personal to be released.

Love...Thy Will Be Done was co-written with Martika. She had written the original lyrics as a prayer, and Prince worked up the music and possibly tweaked them a little but not significantly. A true collaboration.

in those days his b sides were better than half the album so i'd say no. How come you don't call me anymore, She's always in my hair etc.., definitely better than some of the songs on those albums to me.
