Let's all be honest. Prince mostly was way overdressed, too much make-up, too clean. Wanted to be cool, though his walk was cool, but his clothing... naaaah. Mostly dead-wrong and uncool. But, he got away with it ! It suited his approach of his music and stage act very well. - But besides all that, there's also a normal life. And we basically never did see him as not overdressed, not overbehaving, not being just an unshaved dude for instance. He kept a distances. The only acceptable dressed super-weird Prince 'image' we all know is the PR era where he got famous. Now, imagine him sitting next to you in any situation anywhere like that... - The only time I truely liked his unbelievable dressing up was on stage in bikini's and stockings. True rock 'n roll. Eat your heart out Marylin Manson. - And I certainly liked his all black outfits with that big afro ! Super natural, and proud black... without jewelry it would've even be better. It served up to his contemporary mysticism. - Worst of all were the nineties from Diamonds and Pearls on. HORRIFYING ! And most of the nillies as well. Just up until when he started to have his afro back, he became contemporary cool without being or acting 'cool', acting his age as well. - All by all, dressed up rock and pop stars are done. Even nowadays. OK, I accept the super weird Lady Gaga personas. But nowadays, R'nR and POP images are homemade and transparant, just like the music. There's no need for shocking elements anymore. So that far-from-normal-life outfit to underscore a RnR lifestyle is so dead. We now know what the life of a rock or pop artist means. there are no secrets anymore. We all know they eat and shit and laugh and sometimes can't handle things. Just like we do. The new cool isn't anymore about cool. Prince, at the end of his life, got that.

Usually a lot of that has to do with age...and money. And i don't agree, Prince's fashion element is as part of his glory as every melody he ever played. But Prince was engaged in that, he was deeply involved, that was his life. There is a difference between wearing something that suits you, and wearing something just for the sake of wearing. I love Prince cuz his was able to pull that off... and he earned it with hard work. That is one kind of luxury you cant buy with money. Clothes is not important but it is important who wears it. . Not sure what Prince got at the end of his life... i see he stayed true to his ever changing style till the end:

Yes, he looked great in this time period! . I his Parade, Diamonds and Pearls, and Purple Rain eras also. I think those three eras plus 2004-2012 are my favourites. Live 4 Love ~ Love is God, God is love, Girls and boys love God above

Prince's best look, in my opinion, was during the Nude Tour era (1990's) and his performance singing "Electric Chair" on Saturday Night Live. He looked good!!!!!

After that, I have to agree from 2004 to 2012 Prince looked great. He was older, but didn't seem older, his outfits were mature and elegant and he just seemed happy. Those Chicago 2012 shows in many ways seem like an end of an era for me.
He still looked great in early 2013; I dug the baby fro and wish he kept that length. He looked awesome at SXSW. By Montreux, he seemed to suddenly look older, though not necessarily frail or unhealthy.
I have to wonder if Prince progressively growing out his afro more and more was some sign of depression in retrospect - like he had given up on reinventing his appearance. He never wore suits that fitted him.

I co-sign too; Prince's fashion sense was a big part of what made him an icon. It was not foolish or silly to me. His fashion was Prince and it is a testament to him that he truly was able to reinvent. I see entertainers nowadays who have looked the same or found a certain look and never changed. Prince was changing all the time. Loved all his looks but some I was not as keen as the others. I even favored the huge afro and tunics in the end. He literally did a full circle - he came on the scene in that afro and left the scene in an afro. . . only Prince could be so poetic.

Yep, I agree. The best period for me also. He looked healthy and happy and dressed sharp and sophisticated.

I love his looks from Controversy up to LoveSexy. being my favorite the SOTT look. The 90's looks were not that good. The last one i liked was the Musicology look, the best he had.

He did look good during this period, agreed.
My fav period is 1981-1984 and 1986. The nineties overall sucked, later on things got better again with the suits and all. I wasn't very fond of the fro look in the last few years. Some pics are cool though with the fro, like the one that was posted here with the golden outfit. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

On his last Tour * Prince really looked like he didn't belonged here. This photo is like from some dream, from some future, took it how ever you wanna but certainly transcendent...

looks like the buttons weren't buttoned right.
It almost seems like a lost a lot of weight/became very toned/slim during this period. Even the Kiss jacket at some points looked too big
But the Parade era is still my #1 fav

Totally agree. Even a bit of Little Richard - the make-up for instance, PR hairstyle... "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

I have to be honest. I agree In what you say so eloquently. You certainly are right for that. - I do of course have my personal favourites in the way he exposed himself. I remember the Polka-Dot suit in Alphabet St. The Lovesexy outfits. I still don' tlike them at all, but he got away with it, and it intrigued me. I have to admid he was sexy. The cut-out butt pants was a smart Princely move. Still I personally think that yellow lace with the shoulder fillings and horrible typhoon on his head with the cheek curls were horrible. The Grafitti Bridge oversized white shirt, the leather jacket. Not my thing. But I did like his Sign O' The Time long blackleather coat during the live rendition of Sign O' The Times live, the hippie jeans style too, the peach and black was cool. It's still possible today. And of course the fashion of the Parade era was absolutely stunning ! It's all very personal of course. But overall you're right; Prince fashion is part of his glory. I have to admid. No matter what i like or not. "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)
