Pantone's 2018 color of the year :: A nod to creativity, originality, and Prince

Updated: DECEMBER 7, 2017 — 9:17 AM EST

In a nod to Prince, intuition and creativity, the Pantone Color Institute has named ultra violet its color of the year.

It would seem that Prince has been spending his time in the great beyond whispering sweet nothings into the ears of the color gods.

That has to be the reason.

Because in yet another nod to the legacy of the Purple One (and David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix) and as an acknowledgment to life’s great complexities — creativity, originality, ingenuity, the cosmos, intuition, the third-eye chakra and the depth of the unknown — Pantone has chosen ultra violet as its color of the year for 2018. The Love Symbol #2 color seems to be for officially licensed items.
This is very similar.
I think I'm going to paint a wall.

Love Symbol #2 was dismal as a color, though. It was dark, drab, and had nothing relating to Prince. Maybe people, even those who knew & worked with him, saw it as less than worthy of his name associated with it. The estate will snatch onto anything it seems.

However, the Ultraviolet is a bit more reminiscent of Purple Rain and subsequent uses of purple in his career (or even predating PR). And while it's not an official nod to Prince, he certainly influenced it. He was a futuristic rocker and they've noted purple is a futuristic color. I'd use it for something before I ever used that Love Symbol #2. (And is there a #1?)

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

So they are rolling out another line of products with purple but not the one that was officially chosen to represent Prince? i.e. they make money from Prince fans but not the Estate.

This isn't the one that Pantone and the Estate worked on? This Ultra-Violet? I thought it was the one they both worked on.

From the article:

Pantone likes its purples.

In 2014, Pantone predicted radiant orchid, a pinker version of the hue, would serve as an “invitation to innovation” as its color of the year. In August, Pantone named a slightly deeper purple Love Symbol #2, in honor of Prince.

Because in yet another nod to the legacy of the Purple One (and David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix) and as an acknowledgment of life’s great complexities — creativity, originality, ingenuity, the cosmos, intuition, the third-eye chakra, and the depth of the unknown — Pantone has chosen what it calls ultra violet as its color of the year for 2018.

THE PANTONE COLOR INSTITUTE

The Pantone Color Institute’s 2018 color of the year is ultra violet.

“This shade is one of nonconformity,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute in Carlstadt, N.J. “People are looking for ways to display creativity.”

The color, Eiseman said, signifies that we are getting “a little braver and bolder.”

Pantone said Love Symbol #2 was based on the purple piano he had Yamaha make for him.

Pantone just named its ultra-violet hue the 2018 color of the year, and it's one with foodie roots: The rich purple tone is the same one that wraps Cadbury chocolate bars. In honor of the announcement, we've rounded up 10 of our favorite plum-colored kitchen products.
