Delighted to finally hear that full length version of If the Kid, i've always thought it was a hugely underrated track - Prince, just out of nowhere, channels Hot Buttered Soul just to prove he can do it. Incredible.
The released version has one of the laziest ever edits he ever did though, I don't know what he was playing at.

Don't worry one second about what the "elite" traders have. The odds are extremely high that whatever they have doesn't contain something that is going to become your New Favorite Song For All Time.
Sure, there may be some catchy stuff that Prince did that you haven't heard before. But I can absolutely guarantee you that the "elite" traders aren't sitting on something better than "Purple Rain", "Adore", "1999" or whatever your Current Favorite Song For All Time is.
Yet, recent stuff like The Flesh or that Katrina/Lisa jam session are among the most impressive material from Prince I've ever heard, and that's from someone who's been a fan for 28 years and heard pretty much everything that's out there, official or unofficial.
.
I'll admit that I'm hadly ever impressed by most of the new outtakes or alternate versions of official songs, or even the new soundboard shows: I listen to them every once in a while, I'm glad to have them, but most of the time they end-up lost in my outtakes folder after a few listens. After all those years, it's hard for some of us to be impressed. But there are gems. I tripped like crazy on Our Destiny when it leaked 5 years ago. I tripped like crazy on The Flesh. I'm tripping like crazy on that new Katrina/Lisa jam and a few other rehearsals we got those last few years (those jam sessions and rehearsals are my favorites in the end, because they show a side of Prince the official releases hardly ever covered). I certainly wouldn't mind more stuff like that.
.
Of course to each their own, I trip on this one, you'll trip on that one. But there's interesting stuff. More is better.

Even in comparison to the Closer To God leaks?
Opinion seems to be split whether the 'mastering' by Eye has improved or ruined the tracks......
I'd love to hear more opinions on this.
That's just it. It's opinions. Some like it when somebody else "tweaks" or "sweetens" tracks for them, some prefer the raw tracks which they can "tweak" or not themselves to their own tastes.
It's up to the individual to choose what they prefer, luckily both copies are available for free, so, all it costs is a little time and effort. Just sayin'...

Here, the noise reduction is something horrific though, what were they thinking? Lets bring everything down to the level of worst sounding track we have? [Edited 12/11/17 9:38am] |

Put the raw tracks out. No 'remastering'. Let the People salt and pepper to taste.
I wish that we could get best quality for all currently circulating tracks. I have about a half dozen or so that I would really love to have and that would make me smile for a good while (meh, temporarily, anyway...).

I just wanted to say that, when I'm sitting here at work with P in the headphones, listening to this incredible unreleased stuff, I am deeply grateful to those that have made hearing this possible. Never in my wildest did I ever think I'd be this fortunate/in on the secret. Thank you bootleggers and leakers and kind souls!!! [Edited 12/11/17 10:06am] "I like to watch." |

I would assume that databank called it the Lisa/Katrina jam because the three tracks, Katrina's Paper Dolls & Lisa #1 & #2 are essentially a non-stop "jam" that goes on for 52 and a half minutes.

A few random thoughts:
.
1. databank, I don't often reply to you directly, but I enjoy reading your posts. Lots of food for thoughts. So thank you for that. Yeah, it might be the wine talking, but anyway.
.
2. We need a "Work It 3.0"-like set real bad. I mean, it makes no sense for all of us, individually, to determine which version of each outtake sounds the best and to curate our own collections. I'm sure hundreds or even thousands of fans are doing that on their own. This should be a collaborative effort.
.
3. "What If". Is it me or is the end of the strings/horns version a bit... off? It sounds like somebody took the multitrack from the strings/horns sessions, unmuted all the tracks, and added the released version on top of the strings/horns. The mix is a bit weird.

Reading through this thread it sounds like Closer To God has much better sound quality.
Does everyone agree with this?
How about Cool Love specifically as an earlier post claims the 'monofied' version is the best so far?
And what is the difference between 4 Lust here and a previous BFTP.....it may be my ears but they seem the same.
I'm trying to consensus about what to track down/keep/throw away.......

I'm really liking the simple old school organ sound on the Lovesexy demos. Very much in line with "Joy in Repetition"... take a listen to "Positivity #1"

When the choir is calling out "Holland France, London," and the song breaks down to only bass and a few seconds later with the piano and synth stabs. And finally comes together with that guitar playing. I seriously cried over how unbelievable this arrangement is played out. And now I find out that Prince ain't even playing guitar. Huge disappointment. This is a spectacular piece of music. |

Of course I like Jesse. But I am educating my friends on Prince's guitar playing. And so far they are mind boggled of how good he is. This arrangement is by far one of the best outputs in later years for me. Would've been great to knock them out with this song. |
