What Happened to those funky azz baselines?

Listening to Nasty Girls, When Doves Cry, Erotic City, Get it Up--anything in that 1982-85 era--they still sound so funky...what happened to grooves? I hear it every now and again (Come On, 1+1+1=3)...but where is he hiding them?

What happened to the funk, period. He shows flashes of it (particually at aftershows), but methinks dude has mellowed CONSIDERABLY.

not by a bass guitar, but there are patterns formed by the percussion that function as a bass line smile
