I think out of all of the 80s records, ATWIAD should be held in higher esteem.

80s. Controversy This is the album where he defined his sound. There, I said it. I have no idea why people consider Controversy to show no development. Dirty Mind is where he figured out a song writing style. Controversy was the sound. 1999 was the full package. - Do Me Baby is the first of his powerful falsetto ballads, complete with screams. - Private Joy is the introduction of the Lynn drum (I believe that’s right) - Controversy lays out the Minneapolis sound. 90. The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale This album has some of his best organic, band music of his career. I can put this album on and just groove. - When the Lights Go Down is a hypnotic groove with subtle but excellent singing and lyrics. I’d love a whole album like this. - Extraordinary. My only complaint is it’s too short. Cool use of guitar in a ballad. - Old Friends 4 Sale is great. Lyrics aren’t as good as the unreleased original, but the singing and music are better. 2000s. Xpectation Prince’s most innovative jazz fusion album—-the violin by Vanessa Mae is a great addition. (I’ve tried listening to some of her other stuff, and I think Prince and the band brought out her best.) This album is consistently solid. 70s and 2010s, it’s hard to say what’s more or less underrated. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

Musicology and 20Ten don't get a lot of love here, but they're enjoyable records, so I guess we could call them underrated.

In terms of the general public's knowledge of Prince albums:
80s: Controversy (More people should know this ground breaking album) 90s: Crystal Ball (Great selection of songs that only hardcore fans will have heard) 00s: One Night Alone (Same reason) 10s: AOA (Too little promotion for quite a good album)

80s - Parade (His best album, better than Purple Rain and 1999, yes)
90s - Diamond & Pearls (A classic Prince album), Emancipation (love this one) and Come (because it's too good).
00s - Musicology (It has some filler but some of this best songs in years)
10s - Hit N Run Phase Two (It's a masterpiece andit ranks among his best 80s albums)
