Simile, metaphore, comparison, or whatever it's called, it's all the same thing: all 'purposely obscure stuff designed to hide its meaning' or like databank said 'poetry'. lol

falloff

That's because it isn't a metaphor. It's a simile.

A what? English isn't my native language and after more than 30 years of learning, there's still words that are new to me. (I didn't know what "insatiable" meant before I heard the Prince song), so please explain.

A simile is a comparison - something is like another thing. You can always tell a simile by the use of "like" or "as."

A metaphor is when one object is used directly in place of another. The two things are not being compared - one thing is actually the other thing.

For example, in Little Red Corvette, a fast woman is not like a sports car - she is the sports car. In the same song, "horses run free" is a metaphor for having sex.

Does that help?

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Okay, thanks for the explanation. It's the same in Dutch, I just didn't know how to translate it best. Anyway, to answer 1725's other reply, it's not that I don't like a double metaphor/simile, (I'm also a Bob Dylan fan and be also has a style of writing that's all his own), it's just that this line in Come made me wonder, how did he think of this??
Just like Days of Wild has cryptic lyrics that still make sense.

I definitely understood what you were saying earlier. It's a trippy little image that does its job well, which is playing in our mind, painting various notions of his meanings. In short, it's an image that makes us see a few different things, and that's another reason why we like Prince.

It's another 'simile': 'Strip your dress down
Like I was strippin' a Peter Paul's Almond Joy'

Probably as a reference to his childhood favourite chocolate treat.

The Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company was founded by six Armenian immigrants including Peter Paul Halajian in 1919, introducing the Mounds bar in 1920, which became a hit with the U.S. military during World War II, who by 1944 purchased 80% of their production for use in rations (5 million bars/month).[2] The Almond Joy bar was introduced in 1946 as a replacement for the Dreams Bar, which was introduced in 1934, consisting of diced almonds and coconut covered with dark chocolate.[3] In 1978, Peter Paul merged with the Cadbury-Schweppescompany of England. In 1988, Hershey’s purchased the United States rights to their chocolate business for $300 million, which included the Mounds, Almond Joy, and York Peppermint Patties brands, in addition to Cadbury-only products such as Dairy Milk and Carmello.[4]

"Almond Joy" rhymes with "talented boy."

Honestly, people - sometimes it's just about the rhyme scheme.

yes, i'm aware of that, in a recent thread i did mention that prince did tend to get lazy and or not revise himself with his rhyme schemes. when you're working at his pace it's bound to happen but that's why you need revision. i mentioned it with the delores/brontasaurus rhyme but there are many.

I think it means what it says. Some dude named LoUis will soon come with a bucket of squirrel meat for those people in the orgy to eat while having sex and drinking blood.

I always saw Brother Louis is a tall, scary man à la Leatherface. Like I said in a recent TBA thread, that song's imagery evokes a mix between the Gett Off music video and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

A blood clot stops the blood from flowing, and the song is all about not stopping.

A ritabot is either someone similar to Rita Ora or a Rita Ora fan/follower.

= if u ain't like/into Rita Ora, u're a stiff party pooper.

i read, probably on here but i can't remember, that that lyric was some kind of imitation of jamaican patois, don't know if it's true or not.

I'd assume he speaks about a mix of ambient music and field recordings used for relaxation (crickets chirping, water rushing), like meditation muzak that -in that case- a man would use to create a chilled out atmosphere, alongside incense, in order to seduce a woman he brought back home (same way I'd use Morcheeba or Sade lol ).

Could be, I was just interpreting. That's what makes poetry great biggrin
