As demonstrated in “Prince: A Private View,” the late musician had the power to make the ordinary aesthetically lush. In his fifty-seven years, Prince mastered the art of control—not merely the show of self-possession but the daily practice of it. The gravitational pull of racial, sexual, spiritual systems did not appear to act on him. In 1981, the questions he posed in “Controversy”—was he black or white, gay or straight, religious or godlike?—were answered in his right to ask them in the first place, his right to be everything. He was a producer, writer, vocalist, bassist, water drummer, cymbalist, hand-clapper, finger-snapper, rustler of wind chimes. It was by something like magic that he was able to stamp “Slave” on his cheek, to change his mononym to a then-unprintable glyph (both acts in protest of Warner Brothers’ legal exertions), and still to broadcast, for the ages, a spectacle of freedom. Not even the presence of his orthopedic cane, in his last two decades, could persuade us that the congenital heel-wearer, who, onstage, had divided his small body into splits with such animal grace, was aging painfully.

yup, i think we only got glimpses, he was and is a mystery. I still hear stories that completely baffle me, the head of BET said he went to visit paisley in the nineties and he made prince sound like a complete loon. Did Prince do wierd shit intentionally? was he really off? did he really have that much anxiety around people that he would do some of the things the guy said he did? I always thought a lot of it was an act but i still don't know. i think he wanted it that way. wanted people to never be able to pin him down. [Edited 11/13/17 6:58am] | |

What interview was that? I read the interview with Robert Johnson and he had nothing but good things to say. He even said Prince had good business ideas.

I imagne the closest we will have to glimpsing his private self are the old recorded rehersals and the collage of friends and associates' interviews. My favorite thus far is reading of Prince hypnotizing his 1st wife! That'll give you an idea. | |

he didn't say it disparingly, he just described how prince had him come to PP, come to a room with nothing but 3 beds and ran to and from the room to avoid people when no one was around. it's on you tube. of course he said nothing else but great things but just the idea of a dude running around like that is nutty, i have to think it might have been an act. | |

That's a little inaccurate, just want to get it straight... At the BET offices, Prince would run from the elevator to the Johnson's office. When Johnson went to PP, he was put in a room with 3 beds to wait for P. Johnson said he didn't know if that was the mystery Prince just created or what. So that was probably my what it was. LOL. you're right, it was his office, i just listened, he also said prince had a rule at pp where his employees could look at him but not talk to him on certain days andtalk to him but not look at him on others, the shit is funny, makes me miss him but it is also nutty. [Edited 11/14/17 8:43am] | |

He was just fucking with people. Even Asfin said he was told not to look at Prince he did anyway and Prince came right over and spoke to him. I think he said it to see what people would do and maybe because he did not like being stired at.
