Wack Beyond Belief.Ginuwine is a Lucky Cat.because back in the day He would be so Lucky to be a Back-Up Dancer for Prince or MJ.but Singing? Hell NAW! even if it wasn't a Cover Song it sounds so Flat&Lacks any feeling IMHO.He should Leave Cover Versions alone&truth be told Singing as well. mistermaxxx

The deep, layered vocals of the chorus add a whole new dimension to the track and the more slick and simplistic production helps the track be driven more on the merits of it's melody, rather than hidden behind outdated synths and cheap-sounding keyboards.

I really detest the Prince fan community, for reasons best depicted in this thread.
At this moment in time, I get more enjoyment out of hearing Ginuwine's take on the track, over Prince's. Is that such a big deal? If you enjoy Prince's version better, I have no beef with that. But don't insult me simply because my opinion differs. Somebody said that I was dismissing everybody who claimed Prince's was better. That is NOT the case. I merely felt that the over-defensive manner in which many fans approached this thread was indicative of over-zealous, obsessive fans. I only downloaded Ginuwine's cover this morning and the track re-got me, in a way I haven't felt about the song for years. Being honest, I've probably forgotten somewhat the impact the original had on me when I first heard it. So perhaps my original comments were a little pre-mature. But you know what it's like when you're really diggin' a song...

I like the Patti Smith version because it has a humility vibe and at least she didn't try to "improve" it * [This message was edited Tue Apr 15 16:07:05 PDT 2003 by jn2]

That doesn't bode well. Annnd, what do YOU know about production?? That is the way the song was MEANT to sound.

Comparing this to Parade makes no sense IMO, because that album was much more "live" than PR (except for maybe Mountains, and that sounds just as "dated" as WDC). Umm PR was 'LIVE' it was not recorded in a studio, only WDC was not.

Not at all. But you immediately jumped down people's backs for not agreeing with you. Somebody said that I was dismissing everybody who claimed Prince's was better. That is NOT the case. I merely felt that the over-defensive manner in which many fans approached this thread was indicative of over-zealous, obsessive fans.
The first two posts were not overly defensive at all ( and ! were the first posts), but you immediately "rolled your eyes at predictable and blinded Prince fanatics." I only downloaded Ginuwine's cover this morning and the track re-got me, in a way I haven't felt about the song for years. Being honest, I've probably forgotten somewhat the impact the original had on me when I first heard it. So perhaps my original comments were a little pre-mature. There's nothing wrong with liking it, even liking it more. It's just music- it's not so sacred that taste needs to be uniform. However, you immediately got on the defensive. That's all. [This message was edited Tue Apr 15 17:07:24 PDT 2003 by Moonbeam]

Prince fans need to get over their snobby elitism. It's getting in the way of their objectivity. It's not called snobby elitism... it's called difference of opinion, everyone has with it and we should accept that... i'm only a casual Prince enthusiast but i still prefer his version of When Doves Cry over Genuwine's cover...
