Ginuwine's cover of When Doves Cry - A definate improvement.

I know what I'm about to say will be considered a form of blasphemy by many on the org, but having just downloaded Ginuwine's cover of When Doves Cry, I can honestly say, the impossible has been achieved: he's improved upon the original. The deep, layered vocals of the chorus add a whole new dimension to the track and the more slick and simplistic production helps the track be driven more on the merits of it's melody, rather than hidden behind outdated synths and cheap-sounding keyboards.

Anybody who hasn't heard this, I urge you to download it.

I just love the way they've bought the melody more to the fore-front.

Prince fans need to get over their snobby elitism. It's getting in the way of their objectivity.

Of course, I heard it when it came out.

What about the keyboard solo at the end, the fact that the lyrics are personal to Prince and his relationship with Susan, the classic Linn sound, the missing bassline that makes it so unique.

Some young R&B crooner can sing it fair enough, but he can't do it like the original.

At least you've argued your case rather than the others, who disregarded my comments, lost in the blindness of their own fandom.

I do love Prince's original, the melody is timeless... the production however, is not. It's dated sounding. Okay, so it was produced two decades ago, but that's not really any excuse. I have plenty of records in my collection older than When Doves Cry, which still sound fresh and slick to this very day.

That keyboard hook is nasty. That much cannot be disputed.

ditto. that's exactly how i look at some of today contemporaries...it's nice, in a way, 2 see folks givin props 2 their elders and such, but in another way they end up mussin up the entire flow.

not pretty at all. disbelief

What's cheesy about them?

I'm listening to Vanity - Samuelle at the moment, and I think that is better than anything similar from the 90s, or today.

What's current is popular because it's current, not because it's better than what has previously been.

Synths, classic drum machines, lyrics about the night time and dancing - I love that - Pop music today is shite IMO - there's no willing to be an individual - it's all homogenised.

I don't dislike the production on When Doves Cry because it's old, or not in keeping with what's current. I dislike it because I think it cheapens what is otherwise a great song.

The melody has stood the test of time brilliantly. The production hasn't. The production sounds stale and cheap even by the standards of Parade - an album made only a few years later.

That doesn't bode well.

This thread is a "desparate cry for attention."

They'll be 50 more before the day is over..

He knows that this comparison makes absolutely no sense.

Even Timbaland and Ginuwine would give you a "Double-Mack Pimp-Slap" for saying their version was better! lol

Ginuwine has said that his "WDC" was not better, but different. He and Tim couldn't attempt to use the same beat and approach that Prince used...
