At his peak in the 80s as a young song and dance man, Prince smoked James Brown as his peak back in the 70s. True + I've seen P live last year and he's (still) the best perfomer ever
"Please tell me that is a Joke? JB Rocked the 60's&Early 70's Almost Two Decades" False JB peaked from the mid 60s to the early 70s - less than a decade after this he turned more of less into a parody of himself - Prince has released Dirty Mind in 1980 and TRC more than 20 years later "JB had the Better Side-Men" The Revolution (esp during The Parade Era) - The 87-88 band - the NPG 93-96 and the currrent band were/ are terrifics "the Hip-Hop Nation just on Groove through Sampling&Looping will tell you who was Better" they will only always tell us who is easiest to sample and anyways that would mean what? * [This message was edited Tue Apr 15 17:03:28 PDT 2003 by jn2]

JB was the man back then. i remember going to one of his concerts when i was in my early teens. and the brother got down.i love PRINCE, but he would not have been a match for JB back then.

I think JB is not interested in working with Prince.

How could they compete? Why Prince is no match for JB in his prime? What James could do Prince cant? I think Prince is a batter musican, dancer and composer.
can any JB fan tell why he is supposed to be sooo talented? I respect him as a entertainer, but i never saw him with a instrument. And he is not among the best singers.

But i have to admit i know very little about him.

James Brown gets all the respect because of his influence in various genres of music. Hip Hop, Funk (obviously), In Jazz MD said in the 70's during his electric period, he was influenced by Sly, Hendrix, and JB.
You can hear JB's influence all over Prince's music especially the horn lines and harmonies. I don't know if they played together or not but I'd love to hear 'em together live with a band (P-funk horn section please God) just laying down ALLthe funk. JB can play Organ&Drums.like I mentioned He has a Tight Blues Album that got Slept on.the Way He Challenged&Pushed so much out his Bands&Broke Rhythms&Grooves down is out of this World. His Sense of Groove, timing&Rhythm is still a Standard on so many Artists.JB made 4/4 time apart of His Vocabulary IMHO.JB in His Prime Live was Scary Badd!!! peep out 62 Live,Dallas Live 67&71 Live in France.ask the Hip-Hop Nation about JB's Fundemental Arrangements of the Drums alone? when you understand the way He vibed&whatnot you know you are in the presence of a Dominant Musical Figure.JB is a Better Dancer easily.no contest.JB better Band leader&has far more Grooves overall.Prince as a Instrumentalist has Him Beat on that.as a Composer:gotta give it to JB just on the Hits alone.Prince has better Albums but JB has Better Singles&Live Sets IMHO.Vocally Prince.Band Leader JB.can any JB fan tell why he is supposed to be sooo talented? I respect him as a entertainer, but i never saw him with a instrument. And he is not among the best singers. mistermaxxx

Why is everything a competition with Prince and {insert other artist's name here}? This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I would just like to point out that there would probably never would have been a "Prince" without James Brown.

and there probably wouldn'tve been a james brown without his predecessors. (This a little off topic, but hey who cares.) This is why, even though I am a fan of Public Enemy, I didn't like the one lyric about Elvis. I am sure that Elvis had either a direct or indirect effect on some of the artists that inspired Public Enemy. Not to mention opening the door (even just a little bit) for different forms of music. Well, basicly Prince is the biggest rip off of them all, so I kinda dig JB.

there's some crazy, illogical statements on here.Listen to 'cold sweat' or 'Get up offa that thing'! Prince has been borrowing from these two JB classics since 'Beautiful Night' on SOTT.
Amazing that someone had the temerity to say JB was overrated.
