My first impression with UTCM: I think they should've made it in color, it doesn't really work in b/w.

i did here somewhere that Prince laid on a floor and ranted about how bad it was before it was released, well, at least he knew before the critics told him.

UTCM is pretty bad. Not GB bad but bad.I've tried to watch it again a few times over the years and just can't make it through. And bullshit to whoever said "anyone who doesn't like it isn't a true fan".

My collection says otherwise.

Hmm. I'm half-way through and I wouldn't say that it's THAT bad. It got some really funny scenes tho. Like the one where he climbs through her mothers window

ya, it wasn't that bad, wasn't that good either. I still say it's a shame he didn't do things properly and give it time he could have been a really good filmaker. sott made up for it somewhat.

it's in the DMSR book.He got on the floor and cried,as his fiance (Susannah Melvoin) tried to comfort him.He was saying that the movie didn't turn out the way he expected but at that point,it was too late to turn back.He had to promote it and support it.

I just wondered why wouldn't this dude watch movies because he thinks he won't like them (I mean Prince movies, therefore not totally unrelated to a strong center of interest) and I thought only explaination is he doesn't have so much free time and it's too low on his list of priorities. I watched it yesterday with the dub and you are right on that one But some movies work with the dub too. Not every dubbed movie is bad. But the dub for UTCM was pretty bad.

To be honest, that was the one scene you could not watch with the dub, because it doesn't make sense at all.

They can't translate Wrecka Stow to german because the german word for it is "Plattenladen." You can't make a Joke out of it and they really tried to keep it in the original way, but the german accent made it even worse

I didn't see the movie until a couple years ago. So grateful that I didn't have the movie to color the soundtrack. The music on Parade became somethign to me, something precious. When I see the movie, the music seems really out of oplace. Maybe except Girls and Boys and SISIA.

UTCM is GREAT! some rough spots.. but it is pretty enjoyable...

Graffiti Bridge... yes it is bad if you think of it as a movie.. it isnt Casablanca...

BUT

1 - He is GORGEOUS in it

2 - There are some really great musical segments like Elepants & Flowers,

just watch them!

music was brill and even though a lot of people didn't like the classical overtones, i thought it was brialliantly funky. there are things that don't fit in the movie, for a 30's movie, some of the dialogue and some of the details like the neon phones, but it was obviously a fantasy flick.what i recall best from the era are the brutal reviews. not too many movies were savaged like that. there were a lot of great things, his look and wardrobe has to be one of my favorites, the imagery was also fantastic. Prince just thought he could do it all, with music he could, with movies he couldn't.

Late to the party and missed this post, but "Girls and Boys" seemed incredibly out of place in the film to me. Out of nowhere, Christopher grabs a boombox and lip syncs on a piano. It felt jarring and ham fisted. I think the film wold have been improved greatly if Christopher was shown as more of a musician or a street performer with an acoustic - or even more of a piano lounge lizard than he was shown. That would have allowed them to bring in more music which, IMO, would have greatly improved the film.

It's...it's NOT a good movie. Parts of it are cringe worthy. Not as bad as GB but pretty bad. More music and filming it in color would have helped, along with a better script of course. The color gifs I've seen look pretty sweet. Biggest problem is CT came of as a self centered asshole and vamped too much.

UTCM is funny, Graffiti Bridge is not. I consider it better than some 'classics' which work better as sleeping pill medication.
