Prince sampling himself

Stare

I really enjoy this song

And I lovevthe 'sampling' of his own music on this

Kiss(Parade 1986) guiter riff right before singing "kiss" and Sexy Dancer (Prince 1979) the breathing and even calling out Sexy Dancer

Are there any other examples of him post 1995 doing this?

Rainbow Children (the use of Reproduction of the New Breed, Leaders Stand Up Organize)-from Sexuality (Controversy 1981)

We have the segue between Musicology and Illusion, Coma (etc) and there's also something like this going on on the Carmen Electra album.
I don't like it when he did this. It was like he was trying to remind everybody, hey, I was famous back in the day! Look at all the songs I wrote!
And in the case of Stare, it just destroys the whole atmosphere. If I want to listen to Kiss, I'll just put on the maxi single. I don't need to hear it in a song that was made 30 years later.

Yes. In 'My Name is Prince', he samples, 'I Wanna Be Your Lover'.

Let It Go (Sherm Stick Mix) features Ballad of Dorothy Parker (official remix not by Prince)

.

Both Horny Pony and Alphabet Street reference said pony and its motions.

.

Hot Wit U Remix features Nasty Girl chorus sung by P.

.

I like this stuff as it demonstrates a continuity and acknowledges the past.

There is a lot of cross sampling and seeding in things like "Batdance", "200 Balloons", "Rave Un2", etc. "Rave....un2 the joy fantastic" in a few songs, plus "The Future"'s "If a man is considered guilty.." appears in a few places.

In "Partyman", purple party mix he samples all sorts of stuff at the beginning of the song, including "Sexy Dancer", "I Wanna Be Your Lover", "Head", "Partyup", "Let's Work", "1999", "Raspberry Beret", "Erotic City", "Kiss", "U Got The Look", "Housequake", and "Alphabet St".

"My Name is Prince" samples "I Wanna Be Your Lover", "Partyup" and "Controversy".

A remix of "Love Sign" samples "DMSR".

There is also a lot of cross-pollenation with "Dark", "Come", "So Dark", "18 & Over".

The "Welcome, this is where I live, this is where I dream my dreams" from "Acknowledge Me" was originally in "All My Dreams". Also, the "Heeey" at the beginning is from "The Line".

"The Latest Fashion" samples lines from "The Bird", "The Walk", and one other I can't recall right off.

For some reason that made me think of the LOVE show that Cirque did with The Beatles music. They used drums from one song with guitar from another and vocals from another, etc. It was basically a huge wonderful mash-up. Not only do I wish Prince's music would be used in a Cirque show, but that someone could mix those things together like that. It'd be awesome to hear him sing "Kiss" over the drums from "Sexy MF" with a keyboard part from "I Wanna Be Your Lover" in it. "Kiss" & "Sexy MF" both have a shuffle feel to them, and they'd work well together. But in general, there are a lot of opportunities to make something really special visually and aurally.

I’ve never heard this but it sounds a bit like what he did with the second half of Purple Medley;
Mashing the likes of Irresistable Bitch with Sexy MF and Peach with Cream

Did you mean you've not heard the LOVE soundtrack? It's worth a listen. If you appreciate The Beatles, it's a fun listen. I would recommend a cheat sheet to follow what songs are mashed together.

I’m not a big Beatles fan (even though I’m from Liverpool and live 2 mins from John Lennon’s old house!) but I’ll check that out thanks

Sampling yourself is like wearing your own t-shirt: you dont do that unless you're Metallica.

I hate the songs he's sampling himself in, they degrade it to the ground and i wont listen to it more than once. 'My name is Prince' besides, i'm able to swallow that one as an exception.

This isn't exactly sampling per se, but I've always loved when he incorporated little bits of older songs

The one I've heard many say is the bit of Rave in The Max

Ones I've found myself is the keyboard bit from My Computer at the end of Musicology

And another is a 4 note keyboard bit from 2nd half of The Continental at the very end of Extralovable (HnRpP2 version)

Actually, "I Hate U" replays a fill from "Baby" (from For You, at the 1:13 mark) as the main hook.

Regarding "Billy Jack Bitch" and the reason I remembered to come here, Larry Graham's "Love 4 One Another" uses the drum track from "Billy Jack Bitch". Michael B is credited.

Also to the OP, Prince reused the lead line from "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" as the hook in "The Max".

And if you really want some cross-breeding, let's talk about "The Latest Fashion", "My Summertime Thing" etc.

Batdance is the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title.

Was the 12" version of Let's Work (Annie Christian & Controversy) the first time he sampled himself?

I think the Let's Work 12" was the first time he sampled himself that we know of. I always thought it was cool when he did that. Like Strangebuttrue said above, I like the sort of Continuity that it created. He took this to a far out level on the early 90s Maxi Singles, which were as long as albums, taking a song and permuting and augumenting and remixing it into a succession of new songs. I dig that.

Keep your headphones on.

You need to check out DJ Foefur's "All Mixed Up". It's full of "Love"esque moments like that. It's a lot to sit through, at 70 mins long, though, being one long piece rather than the series of discrete tracks that Love is.

Just listened to Baby; that's a fucking great spot picking the I Hate U 'fill' out
.
Yes, I remember Prince saying at the time of GCS2000 release that Michael B always wanted to play with Larry and now he has by using the Billy Jack Bitch drums

I've had that mix since the late 90s or early aughts when he put that out. All Mixed Up is one of the absolute best Prince mixes ever put together.

Plenty of times, though in that list you need to check each song individually to see who sampled it - pretty often, Prince has.

ETA - I had no idea Kiss was so widely sampled (54 times). Prince alone sampled it in Musicology, Stare and Partyman (Purple Party Mix).

A shirt is a shirt. It's how you rock it that matters. I'm sure that many a favorite song of ours started off sampling previous songs, only to evolve into something else. Other times, a lyric, vocal effect, or synth patch just fits. Does it work everytime? Nah.
