Velvet Kitty Cat, 1985 version

Prince re-recorded the VELVET KITTY CAT track again in 1985, as a rockabilly song with different lyrics.

Are the re-written lyrics know ?

How different is it ?

Is it out there?

Some info I found from the "Purple Rain outtakes, A track-by-track guide to the deluxe edition",

But nothing on the new lyrics.

"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

Unsure. Song is not interesting enough as a demo imo.

I agree though. But, if the re-recorded 'rockabilly' version with other lyrics could be different... who knows.

Prince had the ability of changing a less interesting demo into a great song.

Like the song 'Kiss' for example.

Weren't Mazarati responsible for the transformation of Kiss? From what I remember, Prince gave them the song, then took it back when he heard what they'd done with it.

RIP sad

Except that was 90% done by David Z and Coke Johnson and Mazarati. http://musicthing.blogspo...-kiss.html . This is Prince 101.

So that little purple wicked Fella stole actually the sound of Kiss from his musicians? Uncredited ? Well well P.
I knew Maserati fooled around with it, but I've never read the detailed story to that. Thanks Bart.
Nevertheless I consider Prince absolutely capable of turning a
worthless demo into a great tune. Undoubtedly.
Hope he did it with Velvet Kitty Cat, version 1985 as well.
1985 was a great and creative era for him.
Knowing now that it turned into a 'rockabilly' tune, I'm really curious.
Most of Prince's little rockabilly tunes are big fun, and great gems.
Hope it'll pop up one day.

He credited them, at least partially: it says "background vocals by Mazarati" (not Maserati) and "arranged by David Z". I know Tony Christian from Mazarati was infuriated by the whole affair, eventually quoted saying he and the band should have gotten royalties or something in that spirit (I fail to see why, the only additional thing they could have gotten was credit for playing the instruments), but David Z said he was perfectly fine with it (even though he would have deserved a co-writter credit for additional lyrics that would have ensured him an income for life, and a co-producer credit as well).

So IDK. It was wrong, of course, and it's happened on a few other occasions that people wouldn't get credit when credit was due. On the other hand, it's also happened often that Prince would give away his own credits, and sometimes even his writer's royalties, to other people.

The problem is Prince have Mark the basics of the song and the Maserati version is awful. David Z even said it was not working at all. Prince sent Mark away and rearranged the song. The final version sounds a lot like the first version. If any of those guys think they would have gotten vast amounts of money off the Massarati version they are smoking crack. I also remember Alan Leeds saying each member of the Revolution being paid 50k as a salary and getting a 1 million dollar bonus at the end of the tour. What did Mark do with his money? What happened to whatever he got from Motown?

Apparently so. There's a recent Prince Podcast and Michael Dean asks him about Kiss.

Why do you all insist on mispelling Mazarati? Is it some sort of dis thing?

Brownmark originaly played the bass on their recording before Prince stepped in, and removed the complete bass part :

"He quickly eliminated BrownMark’s bass. It fills up the bottom so much you really don't miss the bass part, especially if you only use it on the first downbeat” sayd David Z.

Ah, ok, thanks to you and Dodger for the correction, I had totally forgotten about this.
