the symbol album classic without the rap?

what do you guys think? would the symbol album be classic without the rap? now iam talking about tony m's rap mostly i dont mean prince's raps or spoken word parts. I feel both D&P and the symbol album would be better without tony m's contabutions. Let me know what y'all think. peace

Many many good songs on this!! Could've done without the first two songs (or at least a reworked "My Name is Prince") and definitely could've done without the rap on "2 the 9s" -- but all is good about everything else.

Anxiety

I can't listen to the last few songs of that album...it feels like it just starts devolving into boring Gameboyz bravado and overwrought My Little Pony production values and doesn't come back up for air...some parts of the Symbol album are a nice combination of classic and kitsch - perfect example is "2 the 9s"...such an amazing song, and the rap part at the end, which I hated at the time, I now love because it's so stupid and silly. "How ya gonna make that booty boom"? I mean, come on!

It's an interesting album, I'll give it that. Certainly the only album in my collection featuring Kirstie Alley.

it would have Helped but the Album still suffered from being to Over-Produced&trying to hard to Appeal to so many Ears without having a direct purpose IMHO.

I said it before and I'll say it again: I tried very hard to like o(+> at the time. Technically it may be perfect, but it's completely soulless. It's uninspired and depressing. It's evil demon. Remember that this is the last album he did before Prince - MY NAME IS PRINCE AND I AM FUNKY uzi !!! - turned himself into scrigglything and "bailed out" of the pop biz.

I think D&P is more uninspired than love symbol personally...

anxiety sed: I can't listen to the last few songs of that album...

WHA...?? you mean you can't listen to The Sacrifice of Victor? Oh, LAWD...ok, maybe it's cuz this was my senior year of high school...but i fucking love this album. Yeah, the Tony M raps suck, I thought so even then. But it doesn't take away from the whole. I even like the fucking segues. I like Arrogance. I know, I'm sick and should be quarantined.

But if nothing else, give Sacrifice another spin and see if it don't just lift you up, yo...that song is Ecstasy. and so r u.

and when i reach my destination...my name will be Vic...TOR...ahhh-men.

Get off the "I hate Tony M. and all the rap" trip. Not all of Prince's rap is crap. I think he does pretty well. And I happened to like Tony M. Am I the only fucking one??? I don't think so. I just think some of you are afraid to admit that you liked him too, since everybody's drinkin that HATORADE! "The flow" is a classic Rap song. The Sacrifice of Victor is classic. Even Push from DAP. The rap in Love 2 the 9's is deep (would you stay awake for 14 hours listening to the grass grow?) That's deep if you really think about it. WTF?? Should I go on? 18 & over, Pope, Pussy Control!!!, Now. WTF is yo people's problems here. I'm not joining the Hateration Nation.

Yeah I think maybe the younger ones who like hip-hop like this album as well as most of his 90's stuff. It's the people who can't let go of the purple trench coat that seem to have a problem

No, it's not just the younger ones who like hip hop that like this album. There are many older, long time fans (including me) that appreciate hip-hop, but Tony M was much more of a hinderance than a help. He had his place in songs like Gett Off and Willing and Able, and others where he's simply in the background. Even the band at the time didn't see what Prince saw in him. And, if you've ever seen/heard him live, he completely was a detractor from the show, which maybe the younger ones (who didn't have that great access to material at the time) just haven't seen or heard. He was atrocious live!!

as far as prince is concerned, there are really great tunes on it: I love Sexy MF, Love 2 the 9's, The Morning Papers, The Max, I wanna Melt With U, Sweet Baby, Damn U, Seven, And God Created Woman, The Sacrifice of Victor and I enjoy parts of 3 Chains of Gold. The list summarises also my likings towards rap - I'm not really a fan of this music genre... shrug

As for Tony M., I must admit the following:

- it did happen his rapping worked nice with songs: vide Willing & Able, Live 4 Love, Gett Off
- many a time it absolutely spoilt songs - Jughead (not that there was much to be spoilt - the song is awful per se, with or without Tony)
- he WAS a disaster live omg - I agree - in a way I'm glad I missed the Nude and D&P tours, seeing them on video was painful enough. wall

actually it was a strange fascination that Prince had with some of his black male bandmembers - Tricky, Wally and the third guy (don't remember his name), then the Game Boyz, especially Tony in the 90's and later Kirky J in the mid and late 90's. One thing for sure - it definitely couldn't be for the music.

I like the rap too and I love this cd. I don't think Prince or Tony are the best rappers, but they are not all that bad. I have never understood why so many people on this site hate Tony so much. He was ok. The entire symbol cd kicks ass!!

I think this album would have been better with the lost segues. The lost segues make the segues that are actually on the album, make sense. This is one thing I never understood about the album- the segues. It seemed like they were telling a story, but "we" were given only half the story.
