purplerabbithole said: The album is a mixed bag for me, but i am quite fond of about half of its songs...especially damn u, 7 (7 is not talked about much on here, but I remember loving the song as a kid and I still do), And God Created Woman, Blue LIght, I wanna melt with u, sweet baby, and Sexy M.F. . I also like P's live versions of the Max with 3rdeyegirl.
[Edited 10/14/17 8:55am] [Edited 10/14/17 9:05am] 3 Chains O' Gold is not mentioned much here either, buts it's a really good song. I think 7 is ok, never liked it that much but And God Created Woman is one of the best Prince songs of all time imo Welcome 2 The Dawn

I agree with you about MNIP. MNIP isn't a song to which I listen very often. It's just okay to me; I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. MNIP absolutely has a place on the album because this album is all about Prince exploring and asserting his identity and place in the world, and he's clearly asserting his identity ("My name is Prince") and place in the world ("I am funky" and "the one and only"). MNIP is absolutely a period peice that fits in with the vibe of early 1990s rap and house music. The song is fun and upbeat, and purposeful---he's trying to make that point that he is still relevant in this brave new world of early 1990s popular music. . There are plenty of songs from the early 1990s that are corny but fun ---"Rump Shaker" by Wreckx-N-Effect, "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred, and "Rhythm is a Dancer" by Snap! being some other examples. But there's absolutely a place for fun. Sometimes, people just want to dance their cares away or sing in the shower, and MNIP is a great song for those purposes. The album that got me hooked after Gett Off peaked my interest, and I still love everything about it. . I know the segues and storyline are silly now but there's no questioning the quality of the likes of And God Created Woman, Damn U, 7 and Sexy M.F. I love the live band sound with the horns from around this time.

Love 2 the 9s is sheer brilliance. The songwriting, arrangement and gorgeous layers of vocals are pure Prince. The timeless songwriting also translates well in this terrific cover by a British singer... https://m.youtube.com/wat...R-2S98Rclo

Great album somewhat marred by annoying interludes from a scientoligist that get tiring after the first listen. Still have my CD. Sounds fantastic.

For me, the album always comes as a breath of fresh air after Diamonds and Pearls, where I felt Prince strayed too far into being a follower of trends instead of a leader. While obviously not as good, Love Symbol is more obviously the mind of the guy who did Purple Rain: it's focused and ambitious and taut and the writing and music coalesce very well.
It's also one of the few albums I can think by P that aren't top heavy in terms of quality; from "7" to "The Sacrifice of Victor," you get the album's best moments in its last four or five songs ("Love Me 2 the 9's" and "Sexy MF" both would work better without the raps and spoken interludes, although the purely P portions are awesome).
"Sweet Baby" and especially "And God Created Woman" are really underrated, the latter has such a great landscape to it.

AGCW is masterful; it's one of my favourite tracks on the album. Live 4 Love ~ Love is God, God is love, Girls and boys love God above

Very good album with spectacular highs and lows. A mixed bag like some have said. It's definitely worthy of a song by song evaluation. 1. My Name Is Prince - 2/5, trying too hard, poor choice for a single 2. Sexy M.F. - 5/5, friggin great, lots of attitude, very fonky 3. Love 2 The 9's - 4/5, great beginning and end, middle is weak 4. The Morning Papers - 3/5, decent pop rock ballad, would be a 4 or 5 if the guitar was bolder, louder, and more bad-ass for the solos 5. The Max - 3/5, cheesy but cool boasting song, succeeds where MNIP fails, the Piano and a Microphone version is great 6. Segue - N/A 7. Blue Light - 4/5 great, clever lyrics, slightly cheesy, nice relaxed groove 8. Wanna Melt With U - 4/5 interesting turns or phrase, cacoughany of sounds in a good way 9. Sweet Baby - 3/5, nice enough but not memorable, that live 2002 soundcheck version is very cool 10. The Continental - 3/5, great second half, too loud and random first half 11. Damn U - 3/5, vocals show great range but are a bit too light 12. Arrogance - 1/5, terrible, although the music without any vocals would be cool 13. The Flow - 1/5, terrible, should be on a Tony Album 14. 7 - 5/5, great, powerful, and uplifting 15. And God Created Woman - 5/5, one of Prince best, neo soul three years before D'Angelo 16. 3 Chains O' Gold - 3/5, interesting but Queen did it better already 17. Segue - N/A 18. The Sacrifice Of Victor - 5/5, great jam, good lyrics, good singing 3/5 overall for the album "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

One of my favorite albums by Prince. I still listen at least once a week.
The Ryde Dyvine and Act 2 were some of my favorite Prince videos/Performances. The live performance of I Wanna Melt With U and The Sacrifice of Victor was sublime.

Hi thedance, That's what makes Prince fans so interesting -- huge diversity of opinions. I understand why you might not like Blue Light, but it was a real "grower" for me. The first time I heard it I thought it was pretty weak, reggae light. But after a few listens I appreciated the charm. It's like a light hearted beach song. And for some reason, a huge number of Hawaiian musicians have covered it. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

Agree on all points. . Shame a soundboard of Act 1 has never surfaced as I thought it was great the way he played virtually the whole (Symbol) album first half then some hits and B-sides the second half. . My favourite version of The Sacrifice Of Victor was at the DNA aftershow.

Didn't you get the "trying too hard" feeling with D&P? Everything's personal, of course, but I much prefer this album to the other.
Love the description of MNIP - tongue firmly in cheek in this song and video, I feel.

Great time in my life. I was starting my first job out of college, got my own apartment fell and in love with a different girl every month.
Musically however this album was a disappointment. Not as modest and straightforward as D&P with only 3 stand out tracks (Sexy MF, Love 2 the 9s and Sacrifice of Victor) but even Love 2 the 9s was somewhat broken with the middle section. In retrospect, I'm kinda used to it now but at the time it was a jarring sequence bracketed by possibly Prince's best ever vocal performance (or at least 2nd to Adore).
The "rock-opera" gimmick was whacked and corny, gun-mic embarrasing, the story incomprehensible, also given Mayte's age when they met, a bit creepy.
Still it was a real and complete album that followed the normal album creation and release protocols. The last one in fact. After this one we go down the "Slave" rabbit hole that, in many ways, he never recovers from. In many ways, this album marks the end of Prince as mainstream artist.
