While I believe that Prince does not exist for our amusement and that he is free to do whatever he chooses, peace to his soul, I will mourn the old Prince until he returns.

Co-sign. He was much more of an entertainer back before EVERYTHING seemed to be about JW stuff. He seemed to be more into the music.

Exactly.

Prince was the man back then, but now he's a boring old bum.

Sadly I don't think he ever will. I have a very bad feeling we will never see THAT Prince ever again. sad

I mourn the rational, more mature fans who aren't stuck in a time warp and don't expect a man almost 45 years old to parody himself by continuing to hump his bed on stage, and talk about fucking the taste out of Marsha's mouth.

We are not stuck in a timewarp. I am not saying to go hump a bed or shit like that. But just because some twit with a watchtower tells him he can't sings songs like that etc. doesn't mean he has to stop. His older songs had a realistic edge to them, people could relate to them, now it is all about how the banished ones this, the rainbow children that. Hell as far as I am concerned he Pripped himself off by making The Cross into The Christ, The Was and NEVER will be a song called The Christ in my book.

I totally miss the old Prince, though I definetly respect where he is today. I've been thinking about this for the past 2 days and I've been trying to figure out what's been missing in his current music for me and I figured it out. There is a "fun" element in his music that I haven't genuinely heard from him since 95. Everything to me seems like he's either trying too hard (Emancipation, Rave Un2...) or he's being too serious (TRC, even stuff on ONAL). I miss hearing Prince get weird and experimental on me. I wish that he could put that party vibe back into his music again. Even if he talks about God or politics, he can make it funky and fun (God Is Alive) but still put it in a way that isn't so alienating (SOTT the song, Anna Stesia). I just want to hear Prince have some fun in his music again.

Yes that is what I wanted to say but you nailed it.

To be honest - I hear 95% of the "religion" talk from his fans - not from prince. I was fortunate enough to catch 2 of his One Nite Alone" concerts and don't recall any religion talk. He is still as cool and talented as ever. Lighten up - and be sure of what you speak . . .

That's a very good point.

I don't understand some peoples reactions to Prince's beliefs. But even if one does not personally find another individuals religious choices appealing, surely we can be happy for them?

Ultimately, Prince is his own person, he does not exist for our amusement, nor should he feel restricted by the image that certain fans or media have created for him.

Besides the music is funkier than ever. I wouldn't want to swap 'The Rainbow Children' album or the 'One Nite Alone' tour for anything prince did in the 80's. I think he's better than ever.

Ummm... Isn't he in the entertainment business? If that isn't existing for other's amusement, then what is?

And before anybody answers back saying that its art - well, there's a fine-line between art, entertainment and advertising.

People whom buy Prince records just to add to their collection without even liking them, just don't get it.

Its like the "Classic Coke" / "New Coke" thing in the 80s. If Prince doesn't want to be Prince anymore, I'd be glad for him to change his name again to lessen the confusion.

I would prefer that he not place any restrictions on his creativity.
It does however sadden me that he feels the need to give face-lifts to his already grand works of artistry. sad

The new Prince is okay. I know it's probably at least partly age and maturity, (pshaw -"Growing old is mandatory, growing UP is optional.")but I really do miss the old Prince.

I'm so sad because, like some others on here, I never got a chance to experience the old Prince. No concerts, no parties at Paisley, no nifty cool interviews or appearances at award shows, nothing. I was born in 1985, and didn't become a fan until 2000.

Sure, he's free to have his own beliefs, despite the fact that a lot of fans think him being a JW is just...well, weird.

But, like a lot of people have already said, it's not just the naughtiness(or dirtiness, nastiness, whatever) that we miss. It's the FUN.

TRC is a great album technically, but I personally can't listen to it very often because he is preaching -albeit not a standard way of preaching -to us, and it makes me really unconfortable. It doesn't make me wanna go check out the nearest Kingdom Hall, or even glance over a Watchtower.

So it's HIS fault your parents didn't make you sooner? lol In a way I understand what you're saying - I was into him from day 1 BUT I was too young to experience the concerts & such when shit was just NUTS & he was everywhere. Wasn't old enough to go to the PR show - do you have any idea how much it HURT me to live SO close to Oakland Coliseum & have to settle for sitting on the porch, listening the echo of cheers & faint thump music??? bawl

But that time has PASSED - we'll never have it again, neither will he. I've never lived in Minni so I've never had the pleasure of a PP party. I've missed a lot too, but I don't hold him responsible for that. He's doing his thing, all I can ask is that he continue to share it (musically) w/ me. Anything else is selfish & pretty useless IMO. Make peace w/ who he is now w/ the knowledge that he could remain on this road or jump on a new one. It's his journey, no getting around that... biggrin

take it from someone who knows...it does you NO GOOD AT ALL to miss the past...cuz you can't bring it back...either stop listening to Prince, or wise up and realize that the past is gone, and accept the present. (or dont accept the present).

Hahaha - hardly a surprise to hear that from a JW now, is it? I'll bet you don't even listen to anything but TRC and ONA. And, brilliant as TRC and ONA are, they don't hold a light to ANY of the music he recorded between '82 and '88, no matter how you cut it.

I have always appreciated his spirituality, but he seems to be doing exactly what he rebelled against in the 80's. He seems to be preaching to us, telling us what to believe, instead of using the power of his music to really inspire us.

I don't need him to curse or swear; in fact, a lot of his songs that move me have no profanity or illicit content. In my humble opinion, he makes very good, but not great, music that compares to past material. But then again, why should we be too greedy. We've got enough great stuff to last us a lifetime.
