squirrel meat??

Anyone know the story behind the “bucket of squirrel meat” lyric in Sign ‘O’ The Times? Prince just being funky/silly or did I miss something 🤪?

Squirrel meat is ecstasy, it was mentioned in Superfunkycalifragisexy too.

U fall in love 2 fast and hate 2 soon
And take 4 granted the feeling’s mutual

It's from 'Superfunkycalifragisexy'

If ur body needs water, keep dancin'
Cuz U oughta keep the blood flowin' down 2 ur feet
Brother Maurice'll be 'round in a minute
With a bucket filled in it - squirrel meat
The blood real good if U drink it real fast
But the aftertaste just lasts and lasts
So if U kiss somebody, U wanna party all night (Alright!)

Ahhhh.... it’s all making sense now. I’ve never heard it called that before! I must be under a rock. Thanks! So, ‘squirrel piss’ for the squeaky bike chain and ‘squirrel meat’ for the party. Got it.

I'm unaware of anything official ever said to the effect that squirrel meat was a specific drug e.g. Ecstacy

A quick Google search of "squirrel meat" + ecstasy shows no relevant information connecting both concepts save... Prince fans claiming it on Prince boards!

.

Something self-referencing like that on the internet = BS.

.

Another example of allegations becoming facts just because they've been repeated often enough.

.

Squirrel meat could be a metaphor for pretty much anything but with the blood reference coming right after it, I always took it literally. Whomever this Brother Maurice (or is it Louis?) is, I always saw him as a Leatherface kind of scary character, and the lyrics kind of evoke to me a scene somewhere in the lines of "the Gett Off music video meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre", or more simply the banned Sex Dwarf music video by Soft Cell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ee0S7XWQspA).

.

In any case, unless any proof surfaces that squirrel meat was some local slang for xtc, there is no reason to believe the lyrics refer to that particular drug.

It is NOT a reference to ecstacy, people are just seeing it here and rolling with it as fact for some reason.

So my original thoughts stand. Something funky/silly Prince (or someone in the group) made up. Watch SOTT and it’s also the final quote in the credits. Just feel like there’s something more to know there. My kids are getting into music and lyrics and I know they’re gonna ask me what squirrel meat is at some point. At least I won’t be trying to explain x. Haha

Well if anyone of you have tried X before the lyrics to the song really testify to the experience. Euphoria, when someone touches you...you literally "wanna fuck" as he says in the song.

People take the drug for the euphoric, intoxicating effects. Signs of ecstasy use include heightened sensory perception, and the tactile sense may be exaggerated. A person may want to be touched or want to touch things that feel good. A person going to clubs to dance will have their energy increased so they can dance all night.

Following the track, in the interlude it is said again "Squirrel meat!" and Cat then declares "don't try it!"

Susan Rogers in Per Nilsen's DMSR book:
"It was two in the morning and it(Paisley) was empty. It was dark except for a couple of red candles and I heard a woman's voice say 'Are you looking for Prince?' I found out later the woman was Ingrid Chavez. And I said 'Yes. I'm supposed to meet him here at 2.a.m'. She said 'Well, he's here somewhere'
As I came out of the room, I suddenly came face to face with him and I'm certain he was high. His pupils were rally dilated and he looked unlike I'd ever seen him look before. He looked like he was tripping. He was standing very close to me and he asked, 'I just want to know one thing. Do you still love me?'
And I said that I did and that I knew he loved me. He said. 'Will you stay?' And I said 'No. I won't. Goodnight'. I headed to the door. It was really scary"

Cat Glover very recently in her facebook claimed as well that SHE was the one who went and bought the X that Prince wanted to try. Apparently he had an experience...thus...Lovesexy and so on and so on...but seems he made a cool song and album out of the experience though.

I don't know about this...

Although, I am certainly an "E" generation kid - still playing old skool hardcore - ala production house, xl records, reinforced records, suburban records etc...

Did loads of raves in fields such as raindance, DIY gigs...

And never came across the phrase "squirell meat" outside of Prince records.

Loads of "love doves"... "dennis menace"..."rushes"...."vicks"...."gobstoppers"...

Squirell Meat is certainly not associated with the UK Ecstacy scene of the mid 80s to early 90s.

Don't know about the US though.

And as far as the sensation - yes it is more a deep love than horny....hence the ecstasy - it's about emotion not physical sex.

And the side effect is your dick becomes a peanut - due to blood flow and dehydration.

I always thought a bucket of squirrel meat was just Prince saying it was funky. I mean, what would be funkier than a bucket of squirrel meat? (Sort of like 'a sack of grandaddies.')

As for the ecstacy theory, that's by far one of the stupidest things I've seen on here. What the fu.. would ecstacy have to do with squirrel meat? Sounds like somebody really trying to appear knowledgeable about the infamous ecstacy night.

You know, growing up I took great pride in telling critics Prince claimed that he didn’t drink or do drugs. Or at least I always assumed he didn’t from the interviews I read or watched. When I learned of his illness and close call on that flight, I instantly went on defense. I love him and his music the same either way, but it adds a whole new demention to a hand full of songs I consider epic. Is anyone else with me? I feel like in order to fully understand the enigma that is Prince, hell the NPG for that matter, I should mostly know what I’m referring to when I belt out his songs. I dunno, curiosity kill the cat. Or scarlet pussy?

Like Prince word Spooky Electric (the devil, negativity) Joy Fantastic (positivity, light). He had his own defenitions for things.

I think its just a Prince word he wanted to use in that song that represents "something" that makes you turn on the neon, and then play with yourself...until you turn them on....obviously when you do squirrel meat too much....

Prince did not drink unreasonably or do drugs. As far as I can tell, no one from his inner circles has come-up with any new information contradicting this ever since he's passed, on the contrary. The Blue Tuesday xtc experience is the only known exception, and it's been reported for a good 2 decades. Even when it comes to alcohol, the only known (to me) reference of him being (slightly) drunk is the 1985 Flesh session where he and Sheila killed a bottle of wine.

The painkiller addiction and abuse is another matter entirely: it was no recreative drug use. Same with the alleged 1996 incident.

I'm pretty sure it depends on the situation. I've been horny every time I've taken E and MY squirrel meat has always been rock hard throughout the experience;)
