Back when Prince had a message board on one of his NPGMC websites, I was going to school for my master's degree in social work. One day our instructor brought in a guest speaker to talk about EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy). I was fascinated by the premise behind it. It was a fairly new therpay technique that had been used with police and veterans with some success. Anyway, I messaged PP7 and told him about the therapy technique (this would have been between 2004 / 2007 - unfortunately, can't remember which year exactly, but leaning towards 2006/2007) because I graduated in 2007.

Anyway, I told PP7 about the therapy technique, sent him/her a link to a website that gave more information on it, and said, "I wonder if this would work with music?" He/She responded and said they would pass on the message. It was a month or two later that "Guitar" became available for download on the website. The original version moves between the left and right channels, back and forth. (I remember a lot of fans were questioning why it moved back and forth like that - and seemed really irritated with it.)

But I always wondered if that was Prince's response to my query, about whether EMDR would work with music?

Anyway, today I had to attend a conference and one of the subjects was EMDR usage with veterans. I've gotten the speaker's email address. I'm wondering if I should give him the back story and send him the song?

On another thread titled "It's June" someone mentioned how the song reminded them of EMDR music, and I mentioned how one of the books he left in his office was "THE QUICKENING" which deals with EMDR in detail.. plus there was that weird Facebook "chat" where the only question he answered was about sound frequencies.

I'd be interested if anyone else has any references in his music, interviews or otherwise before the interaction the OP mentions.

Wow. I didn't realize that he had read "The Quickening". I know that when I mentioned it, in the early 2000s, EMDR (while no longer considered experimental) was still in its infancy. The counselor that had used it with police officers (the gentleman that gave the talk to my class) mentioned how many skeptics there were about the effectiveness of EMDR because there were not a lot of studies that had been completed as yet. It was the first time I had heard about EMDR as a therapy technique. The old stand-by with working with individuals with trauma was cognitive-behavioral.

When I mentioned it to PP7, I wasn't sure whether Prince would be interested or not - but I knew he was someone that was always wanting to help people improve themselves, to help them bring about change in their lives. I was interested in whether music would be effective as a tool in EMDR techniques - but when he released "Guitar" digitally, I wasn't expecting lyrics with it - looking mainly for the instrumentation. I felt lyrics would hinder any therapeutic process. But it was interesting listening to that first "Guitar" release, because as the lyrics flowed between the channels, your eyes automatically moved back and forth with the movement between the channels.

I'd be interested to know whether there was any references prior to me sending that message to PP7 too!
