I wonder why he said he was wondering "why is he doing a show?" or "this show". Couldn't really understand the exact word he used. But why was he questioning why Prince would be doing that?

That was truely moving, truely (tears go here..). CHris describing him like a cool cousin(that you know and love but don't know everything about) , wondering why P is still working even though he was obviously looking like he needed a rest (which is how I interpreted the "Why is he doing a show?"), wondering if more could have been done? Even the looks on the other guests' faces show the kind of compassion I find lacking from some around this death because I assume most don't even want to broach the subject of the man's suffering. They just want to live in the past glories, their contributions to his legacy, comical/divo stories, and music. (But in their defense, who would want to broach that subject unless they felt obligated to do so?)

[Edited 10/5/17 8:43am] Or maybe they don't have that natural connection we feel to P. I think P fam who really want to know him as a person are very passionate people. And yes that was a moving vid, too. The first thing that came to my mind as to why Chris said he wondered why P was doing a show was that maybe he thought P was "past" his prime and Chris didn't understand that P was always working. He was still creating so much more music every day. Many people thought that cuz he wasn't on the radio. One thing I love most about P is that he didn't give a hoot what anyone thought of him. He knew and understood us and did his thing anyway.

I never took what he said as a value judgement of P being past his prime. CHris Rock always bragged to others about how much of a badass P was live. He pushed Jimmy Fallon into going and seeing Prince live. Even in that interview, he is talking about how awesome the performance was.I think he was basically stating that P was a massive workaholic with a legendary history so he didn't know why he didn't take breaks. This is what Prince looked like on the way to St. Barts and at that show...

This is not the first time Chris talked about the St. Bart's NYE Performance. I posted it here on the org but my work computer prohibits me from copying and pasting. Dang It! In the other interview Chris talked about P being alone, and had new people with him that he had not met before.

yeah, that's right--I remember that.. Something wasn't seeming right to Chris, I take it. Oddly, KJ was there so they weren't entirely "new" people.

Maybe he didn't understand the huge financial responsibilities P had. So many people depended on him for their livelihoods. Imagine the heating bills for Paisley Park during a Minnesota winter. Maybe P just loved performing and needed a live audience. I feel so sad when I see those white shoes and think he felt he needed them to seem tall. He was always a giant.

It could very well be that he wore heels for so long that it shortened his tendons. I worked with a woman that wore heels for so long that it was painful for her to wear flats. The doc told her that after years of wearing stiletto's it shortened her Achille's Tendon.

Sorry to be critical. They just make me sad for him.

It doesnโt look like it but the design of the shoe makes it kind of hard to tell. Paisley Park is in your heart

Thanks for sharing! Makes me feel sad but also understood by Chris--he knew Prince and he thinks about him everyday. Seems Prince had the affect on people. My interpretation of Chris saying why is he doing this show? Was more like he's awesome, and has accomplished so much and he's doing this gig ..but I see it as Prince being around his Peer group and sadly he was alone so why not rock out what he loves to best and be around people he respects as well. Just my perspective

I feel so sad when I see those white shoes and think he felt he needed them to seem tall. He was always a giant. Exactly. This is along the lines of what my instincts tell me. Chris said prince was like a cousin he really didn't know everything about. They weren't that tight that he would know all we know now about Prince. Prince was extremely private and inaccessible even to other stars, except for when, how and to whatever extent he wanted to be in their presence. Chris didn't get it any more than we did. What P was really doing and why.

I think that is exactly CHris's point. I don't think Chris knew him less than we do. I think they goofed off together when they saw one another and had private conversations and sought each other out at parties etc. . recently, I was watching SNL clips and the comedian Leslie Jones was joking around about Prince and Chris hanging out so I think it went a little beyond fandom. I think what Chris was saying was that he was sad that P was still (at that stage in his career) unable to just kick it with all those other brilliant (sans Beiber, LOL) musicans in beautiful st. Barts and take a break. I think he knew full well Prince's musical crutch but was wondering why he never grew out of it even when he looked thin, tired, and had done so much. Think about it. He was as famous as the rest of the people in that room, he had known Chris since the mid-90's and was like a cousin, and yet he was also just the hired musical guest at a rich dude's party.

Maybe Prince wanted to and enjoyed playing for his contemporaries. Maybe he enjoyed sharing what he had with them and entertaining them, and seeing them have a good time. Plus, showing what he had! Maybe (obviously) he wasn't too proud to do so if he needed the money , especially in preparation for his PAAM tour which was something he really wanted to do.

I wonder how Prince felt about Rock's colorful use of language.

When I first saw that picture of him in Jan 2016 my heart stopped. I thought he looked just tired and thin never thought in a million years he would pass away 3 months over. I am still having issues with his passing. I have accepted he is gone yet it still feels surreal.

I am having trouble with him passing too. I keep asking myself, why couldn't someone have helped him, why was he alone. He knew so much and so much talent and he was tough but also super sweet and so sensitive.

I took it as "why is he doing a show?" ..because I'm sure Chris was aware of how much P was worth, and couldn't understand why he would be doing a show (?)...or maybe he was inquiring about why he was doing a show for that criminal Russian? I counldn't make out Chris' exact wording of the question...who knows. It's really heartwarming to know he looked at P as a "cool cousin"
