No doubt it is, but I always hear a steel guitar in it. Maybe with a violin (fiddle), too playing that main hook. But you're right, it sounds a lot like "Sweet Thing" from Chaka.

i cover that song, even though it's not a personal fave, i learned it because it's one of his biggest hits. you get some nuances when you go through it that you don't get just by listening to it. The amazing thing is, whatever style Prince seems to mimick, there are always those thick chords that give him his own sound, I have to think that had an impact on some of the black music of the last 30 years, he doesn't really get credit for as much as he did influence that particular style, in my opinion. also, as i'm sure you're aware, it's ironic that it's a similar title as the charlie rich classic the most beautiful girl.

Man, some need to acquaint themselves with Country Music.
"The Holy River" lurks into Springsteen / Americana territories, but that doesn't make it country.

Country Music, in the vast majority, revolves around I, IV, and V chords,
with the melody using the 6th in addition of the major chord for variations:
if you're in C, your typical melody will go E-G-A-A-G-C, and will skip the 2nd and 7th (D and B), no matter what chord plays underneath.
Your basic chord progression will be C-C-C-C, F-F-F-F, C-C-G-G, C-C-C-C (altogether, back from the start!).

The bass has also a tendency of moving in 5ths, giving it a popular ball (polka) feeling.
It's also caracterized by repeated arpeggios (the Banjo-like pluckings) and specific orchestration.
This is pretty caricatural, but accurate.

Now go and get some Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris,
and you'll realize a "vibe" is the maximum amount of Country that Prince ever gave us.

You're absolutely free to think what is Country Music and what isn't.

But I can see your point of view: "The Holy River" bends more towards "Jolene",
this kind of "unorthodox" Country standards.

On second thought, I can easily imagine it being covered by a Country artist.
And you're right, Country has come a long way, and has evolved.
Lines have blurred, and it's pretty hard to label something being more Folk-rock than Country-rock.
