Prince - Rocks Off

Fresh from the lab. This is a collection of Prince's most notable rock songs from 1993-2003. Having all of these together makes me realize that he had many more straight up rock songs in the 2nd half of his career than the first. Try making a collection of something similar for yourselves. The songs work really well together. biggrin

I love "I Like It There". And there was room to include everything I wanted on.

"Tangerine" is the extended version. nod

I would have put on "What's My Name" before "I Like It There," but that's my opinion. I never knew you liked much of anything beyond "Dinner With Delores," "Into the Light" and "I Will" from C and D.

It's a wickedly heavy instrumental version of "Days Of Wild" from one of the early Ahdio shows.

I like a lot of the songs as separate songs better than I like it as an album. Much like 'Rave'.

"What's My Name?" does go well with the CB stuff, but it's not exactly a rock song.

Do you like it overall? What about the order?

The order is tight. I just can't stand "I Like It There," so I would always skip it.

Sometimes a project dictates the song selection. I'm not exactly crazy about 'Sarah' or 'Chaos and Disorder', but they need to be there, ya know. Kinda like on our Hits discs, "Take Me With U" needs to be there, even though I think it's a stupid song. Same with 'Same December'. You know how I feel about it. But not only is it a rock song, it had a video.

It makes sense to include it. I just wouldn't put it on mine- my criteria would be different.

What would your criteria be then? Mine is pretty basic, rock songs from the past decade. There weren't many I left off. Just 'Damned If I Do', but I can't even listen to that song and there was no room.

All of the slower rock songs went on my spiritual ballads disc covering the same era.

I'd try to make it more of a collection for me personally rather than representative of what his big songs/hits have been. There goes "I Like It There" right there!

Well, I wanted to make a few hits collections for the later years to go with what we did for 1978-1993. So there are 2 fast discs and 2 ballads discs. My first fast and ballads disc are all pretty hitsy. The other 2 are more thematic.

I Like It There wasn't a hit or a favorite. It just fit.

It does fit and you're right to include it. I just wouldn't put it on mine for the same reasons you wouldn't put on "Damned If I Do," which I also wouldn't include.

Okay, here's a challenge to you. Pretend you're making your own Best of Prince from 1993-2003. And that each disc roughly follows our 4 hits albums from 1978-1993. What would you include if each one had roughly 18 tracks?

These are the criteria:

Disc 1: funky, fast, dark, danceable songs
Disc 2: upbeat, pop/rock songs
Disc 3: spiritual and message ballads
Disc 4: r+b love/hate ballads

Haven't gotten to the art yet. As soon as I get them how I like them, I burn, listen and then post a tracklist to see what people think.

Actually, I think I am going to substitute "Sarah" with "What's My Name?" or something else. The more I listen to it, the less it sounds like a rock song. And at least "What's My Name?" has the spirit of a rock song.

I have got something simular, but included songs with a different style too; like the live version of JustMy Imagination live at Het Paard Van Troje.

I will post the paylist tomorrow. As I am at work.

I always liked The Ride because it reminded me of a deep south blues song, not rock. But anyway, what about Peach? The first time I heard it was in concert in 1993 so I guess it doesn't make the cut since it was written prior to that, oh well cry
