Did Prince use LinnDrum (LM-2) on any songs (not LM-1)?

We know Prince was probably the best Linn LM-1 programmer ever! And the sound is classic as defined by the 1999, Purple Rain, and SOTT albums.

.

.

But did he ever use the 2nd Linn drum machin, LinnDrum (AKA LM-2)? It was cheaper and more widelyu produced.

.

.

I lways thought The GLamorous Life was done on it (the snare sounds very different on that album) but maybe it was just post production effects, editing etc.

Although many would be quite adamant that the LM-1 (at latter points with customized firmware/ROMs), was his only 'vintage era' electronic drum machine, I myself believe that it is not beyond reason (not likely, but not impossible) that he may have used the LM-2 or other revisions on occasion.

.

If so, it may have been the consequence of studio gear availability (solid-state malfunctions) or what was available on the ready while recording during touring off-time. And obviously just plain exploration, as well.

.

Certain aspects of the drum programming on 'G-Spot', 'Mountains', even 'If I Was Your Girlfriend', etc., sound quite a bit like the LM-2 in its unfiltered/unprocessed playback state.

What do you think about Glam Life album? Some cuts (like Shortberry Strawcake for example) sound different than the classic LM 1.

.

.

Also, the famous KISS beat by David Z, he mentions using the Linn 9000. I wonder if that used LM 1 samples because to me Kiss sounds like quintessential LM-1.

I noticed upon 1st listening that the whole MPLS SOUND album is the Linndrum instead of the LM-1. You can hear the difference real well with the snare. Linndrum for sure. It's also the Linndrum pictured on the cover.

Also, on the 20ten album it's the obvious Linndrum snare sound.

The reason, I guess, is because the Linndrum could be midified. The LM-1 could not. I had my Linndrum midified and adjusted so you can tune every sound in pitch, just like the LM-1. That makes it more easy to record and programm. Although there is a very difference in sound, even with the eprom's changed. There's something about the hi-hat on the LM-1 that cannot sound alike on the Linndrum. Not even with LM-1 eprom's in it.

Glamorous Life

A Love Bizarre

Erotic City

Possessed (2nd Version)

Just a few of the songs off top. He's used elements of just about every popular drum machine and synth module of its time during the 80's.

You're saying the songs are LinnDrum and not LM 1?

I don't hear it. I hear the LM-1 in combination with the Pearl SY-1. He used that a lot back in those days. The SY-1 was his favourite toy just before he got the Linn LM-1. I'm not saying you are wrong, I just don't hear the Linndrum in those songs.

I am not sure if the post is appropriate here, but I have always been fascinated on how P used and programmed this drum machine so well. Of course he was a musical genius. Self taught on all of those instruments. But that's what I marvel at. How or why would a musician as talented at P even use a drum machine? And then to be able to completely master that too just blows me away. I have to think that this too was all self taught. And wasn't this a fairly cutting edge piece of technology at the time. Incredible.
