Prince's vocal cords with all his delicious screams, passionate vocalizations, mind-blowing range and that stacatto , piercing pterosauris call, ..does anyone know how Prince cared for/preserved his voice?

My presumption is, besides it being one of those once in a generation voices, a lot of it comes down to technique and not living a typical rock lifestyle. Technique: A lot of the great screamers use a technique that enables them to sound like they're screaming harder than they actually are. Some singers can make it sound like they're screaming but they're really not vocalizing any louder/harder than they would with a normal vocal.I know how to do it, it just doesn't sound that great when I do it. Lifestyle: At one point or another in their careers, the majority of rockers and singers either smoked, did hard drugs, drank heavily (hard liquor), and sometimes all 3. That, even for a short time, will ravage a great set of vocal cords. Prince definitely dabbled in drugs, but he wasn't a smoker or hard drinker. Just some wine here and there from my understanding.

Bobby Z and Dr Fink recently said this in an interview: Link ---> http://www.salon.com/2017...mes-brown/
Bobby Z: “Darling Nikki” and “The Beautiful Ones,” I mean, those are shredding screams. And he did it night after night. Night after night!
Fink: Yeah, without really having any issue.
Which doesn’t happen to normal singers. Fink: No, no.
Bobby Z: That was his thing. His ear. His pitch and his ear. His pitch — and his perfect timing. No matter what the setting — [even if] it was an echoing arena, he could always know where he was at. That was both good and bad if you got on the other side of that. But he was an impeccable musician.

He dabbled in drugs as a recreational drug user? How do you know this? Who in over a year and a half has said this?

Good Question ..Ive often wondered HOW he managed those screams without destroying his falsetto and higer register ..
I read that He drank a lot of Herbal tea with LOADS of Honey
Honey contains prophilis which is known in the Alternate Health Industry as a natural antibiotic and is included into cough syrups and lozenges to sooth sore throats....

Prince's voice was amazing. I noticed even up until that concert in Atlanta where he looked pretty weak and unhealthy to me. His voice sounded the same as it hs all those years before.

Perhaps this was a reason that he didn't talk a lot immediately after performances and often spoke with a low volume. That is a great way to save your voice.

That would have been a good title: Delicious Screams. All you others say Hell Yea!!

I wonder how much of it had to do with the fact that Prince did very little belting in his modal / chest range. His chest voice was quite underdeveloped compared to his falsetto.

Look at rockers who wrecked their voices or can’t sing songs in the original key and most if not all of them were smokers (and probably heavy drinkers too). Paisley Park is in your heart

he sang as well or better than ever, he was ready for it, when you are working alone you have to be that much better.
two things helped with his voice, 1. constant maintenance, constant singing 2. proper use, and care for his voice. I've read how he used humidifiers before shows. Just a consummate professional. How many guys from that era can still sing at all? boy george sounds horrible, i watched adam ant try to do some of his songs and he was awful because you have to stay on your chops, prince always did.

At the risk of going down the rabbit hole, it is pretty well known he was on E when he decided to pull the Black album. You don't just say, "Hey, I've never done a drug before, but I'm going to have some E today just this once." If he was on E, it probably wasn't the first time, but even if it was, you'd be niave to think he never did anything before it. Or probably after. Pretty obvious he didn't do much (that was the point of my post). But he absolutely would have wanted to experience the same highs his musical heros did, even if just to try it out. You're going to tell me he toured all that time with Rick James, lifted huge chunks of his act and sound wholesale, and didn't try a little toot of coke here and there? Come on... Bob... Sinead was on Dr Phil today. At the very end she sang 2 lines of Nothing Compares 2 U, a capella. Her voice is shot. Prince was rare in so many ways. [Edited 9/12/17 16:06pm] "if you can't clap on the one, then don't clap at all"

Prince did use drugs,to which extent i don't know but his former associate girl ,singer and former lover told me that Prince did experiment with drugs with his inner circle.and no i don't want to tell who is the source but that girl was there for almost a decade.

too much truth for these people on here...

and I was told by an associate that near the end it had become a "horror show and everybody was waiting around for someone else to do something...everyone knew...and it had been going on for a long time."
OK everyone, back to your favorite album lists.

I dont doubt that he dabbled...
We all have havent we ?
Gosh...when I was young I snorted Coke, SPeed, even Heroin...I drank myself into a stupor on more than one occassion... I only got drunk of Tequila ONCE though then I realised its not called Ta Kill Ya for nothing..lol
I call myself a non drinker...but I will sip a glass of Liquer, or maybe even one glass of WIne, if someone insnsits thatit deserves to be tasted...My Son is a sommelier so occasionally he will ask me to Try this....and I do...but its rare that I can even finish one glass...
I love a Sambucca with FLaming Coffee Beans, or countreau on ice...
but in a year, I might drink two or three times....
THe point is....I dont go beyond dabbling becasue I didnt like the way I lost control of my mind and lost motivation too..I LOVE beong clear in my mind....
Obviously Prince was the same..the Body of work he left behind would not exist if he had of done anything more than Dabbled...

No I’ve never used drugs. So we all haven’t. But I am amazed at how Prince was able to function and work the way he did being strung out on drugs all the time. Man he really was Superman. [Edited 9/12/17 18:47pm] Paisley Park is in your heart

i never have, outside of the times when i was a kid and my parents made me take a sip or a puff, outside of that never. I hate drugs, i hate what they do to people all things considered and I try to stay away from as many pain killers as I can by either just riding out a migraine or taking the pain until it subsides. Prince's death only made me more against the stuff than i already was. I've said it several times here but I dumped out the codeines i took for migraines the day after he died and haven't taken any since, i still get migraines all the time, in fact had one last night, it's a time killer for sure but I'm not taking anything for them. the rationale is sound a lot of the time, when i took codeines, they usually worked pretty good and i could quickly get back to functioning, now i just have to lay around (if i possibly can) until it goes away.

it very well could be, i've heard that rod stewart would refuse to talk before a show, would write if a person had something to say. Yakking definitely takes it's toll on a voice, i can tell you that as a singer. Sometimes it's hard to avoid, if i'm in a club, a loud club and i'm getting ready to play, people who know me invariably come up and start yakking, and i have to yak back and since it's loud i have to talk at a high volume.

rick said the dude was so clean that he forced some alcohol down his throat, wish he'd stayed that way. I heard about the wine drinking years ago, but never heard about drugs until the black album story. He was certainly inconsisten when it came to drugs, they were a firing offense for his band and he chided the Time in song for messing with cocaine. Also, many people swear up and down that he was clean in those years, susan rodgers mentions that he was always sober in the studio and seems to have only encountered him on drugs the one time that she saw him during the black album episode. So, either Prince was someone who functioned perfectly normal on drugs or he only did it at certain times and somehow hid it really well.

cindyt said: he died from an overdose...why do you think he didn't do drugs? kinda delusional there... Who said he never used drugs? We all know what he died from. But plenty of people who weren’t recreational drug users have had issues (and in some cases OD’d) with painkillers. I have a cousin who was seriously messed up (she’s clean now) because she was injured in a car accident was given pain meds and got hooked on them. Paisley Park is in your heart
